Hi@all!
I've installed rivatuner to see the gpu speed ratings under vista. In the VAIO optimized power profile the speed is not switched, it's allways running in full 450 MHz. In the vista Energy-Mode the speed of gpu is 200 Mhz.
Is that normal? I'm very unhappy as the gpu speed is also running in full speed mode when on battery...
What can i do?
-
So you want your card to downclock but it doesn't?
What driver are you using?
It should say in rivatuner -
Hi!
I'm using the 167.43 Nvidia driver from sony.
I doesn't wan't to underclock, i my opinion this must be automatically or not?
When i'm on battery, the 450 MHz should be reduced to 200 Mhz or not? -
Yes it should reduce automatically whenever you're not playing games
Do you use the hardware monitor built into rivatuner to check the clocks?
167.43 supports "powermizer" so it's probably not the drivers. -
Yes, i'm using the rivatuner hardware monitor.
Very strange...no switching.
I've tested a lot of drivers right now, should i go back to 97.54 ?
Maybe somethings wrong with the power profiles? -
I don't think it's the power profiles. I turned power management off and my 8400m gt still downclocks when i'm not playing games.
In rivatuner tick the "enable driver-level hardware overclocking" box and make sure the low power 3D and standard 2D are set to lower values than the performance 3D clocks then click apply. It would usually take a minute or two for the clocks to go into their low power state.
Might be worth a try -
Done. But nothing happend. The speed only changes when i'm on the energysave profile. but nothing happends when i disconnected the ac adapter...
Which driver is installed on your system? -
I'm using 169.09 which solves alot of game errors for me but didn't really change much else. It's worth a shot though as it's a very stable driver for most people.
Try also downloading GPU-Z as rivatuner's hardwaremonitor is "buggy" to say the least. -
O.k., you are using a modded driver or is this a official sony release?
Now i've deinstalled everything and runing drive cleaner.net - maybe the problem is caused by some old registry entries... -
167.43 was the official sony release last i checked.
It's using the modded inf from laptopvideo2go.com.
Driversweeper from guru3d.com works for completely removing old drivers aswell.
Updating is always worth a shot because every driver can't be perfectly compatible with every system (obviosly)
-
Don't downgrade w/o a full backup - I am running 167.43 also and was testing an external display adjustment, tried to load the original driver (101.1 or something like that on mine) and completely lost the nVidia card. Had to restore my OS partition (well, I tried one System Restore and it did not work).
Anyway - Willy my friend - in GPU under the "Sensors" tab, should the GPU Core Clock speed change when switching between AC and battery only power? If so, mine stays at 450 MHz too. -
O.k., thank you for that information.
BTW: Installing the 97.54 doesn't make a difference.
Strange.
Did you make a deinstallation of the old driver bevor upgrading to 169.04? What about the FN Keys for dimming, are they working with the modded inf? -
Yes i uninstalled and ran driversweeper in "safe mode" then rebooted into normal mode and installed the modded one. Everything works just fine, except for some options missing from the nvidia control panel.
I wouldn't go back to stock drivers anyway, give the 169's a try -
I take it you don't have a full backup?
Cpu and gpu usually downclock instantly when disconnected from power supply.
I think my stock drivers didn't downclock but all others have.
Do 167.43 work? -
Yes, I have backups for both OS and Data partitions - it only takes me about 25 minutes to do a full OS restore (well, and another 25 minutes for Outlook Exchnage to sync!). I probably should have tried at least one more System Restore point, but I knew my OS image was clean...
Anyway - GPU tells me the MHz does not change - but 167.43 works great otherwise. Maybe I'll try 169 anyway and see if that makes a difference. Thanks! -
I usually do system restores from safe mode, alot don't fully work otherwise.
169.09 and 174.74 are great for games especially the latterGood luck
-
Now i've tested the 174 driver after a full uninstallation and reg clean. But the clock speed does'nt change from 450 Mhz. Any ideas?
-
Try going into the advance settings of a specific power plan and change the "pci express" settings to on.
-
Nothing changes - still 450 Mhz, with/without AC adapter in VAIO Optimized Profile
-
Do you have a "powermizer" tab in nvidia control panel? I've seen some people have one but i never did with my card\driver combo's. This might give you some options but you're on you own from there
-
SirRobin - I found one that works - http://www.notebookforums.com/thread216840.html
175.16
174.74 did not clockdown for me either. This one clocked down to ~160MHz immediately after I pulled the power cord out. And it looks good to me so far. -
Thanks a lot! Have you deinstalled the old driver bevor updating? I think the possibility to use the fn key for brightness control will be lost?
-
I uninstalled 167.43 per Willy's instructions above - uninstalled the nvida driver with Uninstaller (I use Revo Uninstaller, BTW, cleans the registry very well - better than Vista or even CCleaner's), then booted in Safe Mode and ran Driver Sweeper and then installed 174.74. However, the one I linked is a complete install package and I just installed it as is - did not uninstall 174.74 before hand. I may go back and redo it tonight, I was just testing this afternoon. But so far, all is working well - Brightness Keys work too!
-
I just did an uninstall/reinstall to be safe.
BONUS: I run dual monitors - and I use my external on the left instead of the Vista defaulted right side. I have been looking for a way to change this default and make it stick. Someone suggested a new nVidia driver would allow nVidia to "remember" my settings - well 175.16 does. Now I can plug/unplug at will and my left side setting will work.
SWEEEET! -
Well now i know what driver i'll be recommending(and testing) from now on -
I've tested the 175.16 last night - but no downclock on my system. Strange. Maybe the problem was that i did an update on 174.64.
Is it right that you've completely deinstalled any version, and then installed the 175.16 and your FN keys worked?
So the special parts in the inf for the FN Keys are included? -
Yes, I uninstalled everything again and then reinstalled 175.16 and it works fine - FN Key for brightness and there are more options on the Control Panel then there were with 167.43. I would try some of the other versions and see if they help.
-
So, i'm back after testing the 175.16. Did not downclock my 7400 go, GPU-Z shows no information. But the FN keys worked without problems. Very nice.
Now i'm running the 169.08 driver again.
Other problem is, that the Regcleaner and Drive Cleaner did completley uninstall the drivers from nvidia, so after deinstallation and reboot there is only the standard-vga driver. Is there a chance to get back the originals? -
Maybe these versions just don't work well with the 7400 go card?? You should be able to get the original driver off the Sony Support site.
-
There's no reason why those drivers shouldn't enable powermizer with your card.
You could try adding a few lines to the modded inf file as indicated here.
It might also be worth trying an older 163.xx driver. -
Is there now a newer driver than 169.08 which working powermizer with a 7400 go? I'm very unhappy about this old driver on my system...
-
Done reinstallation of system last two days. Problem with not switching gpu exists again. In VAIO optimized power settings no gpu speed switching with latest sony driver.
Is there a way to add some entries in the registry to fix?
SZ: 7400go with 167.43 Vista - gpu speed not switched?
