On this SZ670, with Vista SP1, the headphone jack is often inoperative. The speakers work fine.

When that jack is dead, checking Control Panel > Sounds, etc. shows that the High Definition Audio Device is simply not there. When it *is* present and I can check properties, I see that it's a Microsoft item.

I thought this unit used some other audio driver...

    Any ideas?

Only the speakers will work and headphone jack won't work if the Sony audio driver hasn't been installed.

Vista & Vista SP1 both recognise the soundcard and install the MS driver. So it appears the audio is working until you use headphones.

Try reinstalling the Sigmatel audio driver, either from the Recovery DVD or download from VAIO support.

When installed correctly you should see 2 entries in Device Manager as in the attachments.

    That did it!
For some reason the SP1 install conflicted with the Sigmatel driver, and Microsoft won. Reinstalling the driver seems to have worked, though its date precedes SP1.

This laptop has P1's stripped OS, but I'm looking at your streamlined/selectable ISO procedure. Very attractive - I may look more closely. However, the utilities downloadable from the Sony site lack one item: Battery Care. It's useful for those who use the laptop as a desktop replacement AND for travel.

    THANKS!
