I have a SZ-340 with core 2 duo processor (2 cores) & Windows XP home.

When I look at Performance in the Windows Task Manager (to get there click Ctrl/Alt/Del & select the Performance tab) I only see a single CPU Usage History. Furthermore, if I select View, then CPU History, I get a greyed single selection of "One Graph Per CPU." This implies I only have one CPU, not two!

As a comparison, I looked at my desktop system, & a Vista version of the SZ series at the store. On those, if I select View, then CPU History, I get a choice of "One Graph, All CPUs", & only one graph appears. The other choice is "One Graph Per CPU", & in that case I see two CPU Usage Historys.

If someone has an SZ-340, please check & see what you have. I sent my unit back for CD/DVD burner repair, & they "updated" my BIOS. I don't know if my unit only showed one CPU prior the the BIOS update, but I'm thinking perhaps they set a parameter wrong (one not visible to me) in the BIOS.

The only other thing I can think of is the XP Home vs Pro issue. That would be sad if my dual core computer was really only single core if I didn't use XP Pro.

    Anyone care to chime in?

    Thanks,

    --Alan

Look in your BIOS and make sure that you have dual-core enabled.

It was an option in my Dell and is in my T60.

As far as I can see, I don't have a BIOS selection to enable or disable dual core. I'm wondering if it's some hidden function since I don't have much to choose from in my BIOS, not like my desktop using an ASUS motherboard. I can tweak everything on that one!

So, did you try the patch?

This exact same thing happened to me after I had been monkeying around in the BIOS after I installed the BIOS update. What fixed it for me was I went back to the BIOS and I reset everything to default. After a reboot, the two cores were back again. Happy days.

    Hi System64 & jdbrookes,

Got up this morning & saw your two messages. I tried the BIOS default reset first & it worked -- I now have two CPU showing!

The BIOS update was done by Sony -- obviously the service center didn't know what they were doing. Funny though, I couldn't see any menu to change the # of CPU's.

The puter is going back to Sony again though. They replaced the CD/DVD burner but I'm still having CD burn problems.
