How can you tell what unit comes with the power saving LED backlighting?

I would've thought 110/120 was normal, 140 was LED and customizable on Sony's hompage, 160 is the LED and carbon fiber units.

BUT if you custom build the sz140, it doesnt say if it comes with the LED backlighting. Only if you look at a pre-configured unit does it say it comes with it.

So for those that have the LED backlighting, how can you tell its the LED version? I cant test this as no stores carry the led backlighted units.

The SZ40 never comes with the LED backlight.
Only the premium model (SZ50 and up).

LED and Carbon models are the same and come with all premiums machine.
You can tell if it's a LED backlight by two things:
    1-The lid is much thinner
    2-It's a SZ50 or more

not true. The sz140 above if you read the specs say LED white backlighting

    " Long Battery Life13
Capitalizing on a high-capacity battery, Intel® Core™ Duo processor, innovative Hybrid Graphics System and a white LED LCD backlight, the SZ Premium Notebook can blaze through your workload and your entertainment demands for hours. And can you actually read what you are quoting?
That's for the Premium Notebook! SZ50 and up.

But please go ahead, order you SZ140 and see if it has LED backlight.
Why do you ask if a)you know the answer b)you don't want any answers not telling you what you want to hear

Did YOU read the link I posted? It says sz140. Which is why I posted the question. So do some 140's come with LED and other come with normal screens? Maybe some sz140 premium models? In the link I posted, it seems the unit (sz140) comes with a magnesium casing vs multi-layered carbon fiber casing (as per the sz150)

    I asked:
    a) Because Sony's answer wasn't clear if the LED screens only come on select models of the sz140.

    b) OK, I'll let you get off easy on that one because YOU didn't read the link I quoted from.

"The preconfigured specs are a typo."

That's what I'm trying to find out. I tried calling Sony but got no answer.

None of the 140's come with led screens. Its a typo......hence why you couldnt find the option for it when building a custom config.

Must be the same typo that keeps changing the battery life from 4-7hours on different .pdfs. lol. I bet you were wondering when I was gonna sneak in the battery life comment in. J/K

Is this the section you are reffering to?

If so, I don't believe its a typo. It looks like its a synopsis of the SZ range in general. And it clearly states LED backlighting is on the premium notebooks.

I'm guessing the features tab is the same page for all models. And so gives a overview of the features available on the range. This is a common tactic to encourage you to go for higher models. It is the specification page which is model specific.

And to be honest, I would think that was pretty self explanatory.

You would think that. but if you pull up the sz140 and sz120 product page, they are different. So either its a typo or there really is a sz140 unit that you can buy with a led backlit screen.

    Can you provide a link?

You sure it isn't a synopsis of the SZ line which is the same on the pages for all models?

As appears to be the case with the previous link you provided.

Here is the link to the sz140 (as posted form a previous post)
    http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...tegoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_SZSeries

    Here is the sz160
    http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...tegoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_SZSeries

You can see at the top, it does say sz140, and if you read about it below it mentions the LED backlight. It is NOT the same as the sz160 because in the first paragraph it states what the casing is made out of. You'll notice the sz140 is magnesium, while the sz160 is the carbon fiber. So either is there is a typo (which is what I'm trying to find out) or there is a sz140 thats cheaper, but has the better screen.

I'm leaning towards typo... That website does indeed mention the LED backlight but it says, "the SZ Premium Notebook can blaze through your workload and your entertainment demands for hours." A further look at the spec sheet shows a battery life of "up to 5.5 hours," which is what is quoted on the standard, non-premium models. Also, in the paragraphs where they are specifically pointing to this particular model, they reference the model number, SZ140PC. The rest of the paragraphs apply to the entire SZ line, which makes me think it's a cut and paste job used as a template for all the SZ model-specific pages. This is also the only place on any of this model's sites where the term LED is used.

I know. big mistake if that's the case. It's like Buying a limited ed mustang where it says it comes with a v8, only to find out, the v8 is only in the GT.

The features tab looks like a generic synopsis of the range which is used for all machines. There is no mention of the specific model, apart from in one paragraph. All other parts of the tab, clearly are written as a generic description of the model range and available features.

Only the top of the page gives specific highlights of the individual model. And that is not part of the features tab.

And as previously highlighted, the references to LED screens are clearly in relation to the premium model. Which the 140 is not.

So no, it doesn't come with the LED backlight.

But I think its pretty clear when you go to the next tab, "specification".

I'm still waiting for my callback from Sony on this. But as to your answer above, if you read teh sz160 specifications tab, it doesn't say LED. At least I dont remember it saying...

However, it does say the 160 is a premium. It doesn't say that about the 140.

And as the link below shows, the LED backlit screen is only available on premium models.

    http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/Notebooks/SZSeries/Research1/SZFeatures

But I think the most telling fact is still that the feature tab reads as a generic range synopsis. Rather then anything model specific.
