    works fine.

Stick with 2GB if you are using 32-bit system. There is no performance gain.

With Vista, it most certainly will, especially if you run a lot of apps and certain types of apps. Of course a 32-bit OS can't use all of it, but that's another story. RAM is cheap enough now (4GB for $100 or less) that even if your system only sees 3.0-3.4GB (typical), it's worthwhile for many people.

I don't suggest installing 2GB+1GB thinking you can't use over 3GB anyway, because then you'll be defeating the dual-channel capability of your chipset, which requires matched sticks to work.

I do agree that for *most* people running XP, 2GB is plenty.

Another good reason to go with 4gb other than price is boot time. My system boots almost as fast as it hibernates now.
