SZ120 won't recognize DVD (video or data) discs

Hello All,

I'm a brand new SZ120 owner (bought on Saturday) and first-time poster. Before I ask my question, lemme say that this forum is amazing and it's great to see so many people helping each other and sharing great info.

So far, I'm liking my SZ120, but it won't read DVDs of any kind. It has no problem reading CDs (audio CDs, CD-ROMs, CD-R, you name it), but doesn't recognize DVDs (neither DVD-ROMs nor movies). If I insert one, it does spin for about 2-3 seconds, after which it emits a quiet "sigh" sound, then pauses for about a second, and tries again. The LED blinks during the whole time (about 7 seconds).

Then... nothing. Explorer shows nothing for the drive (when a DVD is in it). It won't play in WMP, nadda. I've tried deleting the driver and I've also updated anything that looks remotely relevent from esupport.sony.com. Sony telephone support has been unhelpful so far.

Any ideas?

I had that exact issue where it wouldnt read dvds. did your ever read dvds? I exchanged mine. I was so ticked as I spent 2hrs installing software on it. And since none were dvds I never noticed.

 

Try to check if Video Lan (VLC) will work first. It has the decoder for DVDs. I never bothered to download the Codecs for Media Player since I use Power DVD and VLC. If it doesn't work with VLC, click on My Computer and check the hardware profile and see if there is a big Yellow error sign on the optical drive. Update the driver if you have to. If it doesn't work, you can always exchange it.

Given that you probably bought it from a retail store, you may want to negotiate with the store manager to waive the restocking fee if you agree to buy something else in their store.

 

I have have the same problem...with my older HP (which I still use side by side with my sz 120).....its been a long time but now I dont really care considering my SZ plays DVD's...

and they both are on the same desk


btw I have tried everything and you can consider me to be "extreme" with computers trying to fix it...I got to no solution except to send it in to HP which I didnt because I needed it at the time.

 

Update: it was definitely a bad drive (hardware problem). Circuit City took it back, without charging a restocking fee. Thanks for all your help.

I've got a new one now, which works like a dream (except the loose battery).

neilk2350 I dont remember that or I would've said something. Was your issue before I even got my sz110? ie: before I had my issue?
