If my SZ is unplugged when I turn it on, it seems to be slow to the point where videos/dvds don't play smoothly and they stutter and skip around. I also notice that games have considerable frameloss. Even when I plug the power adaptor back in, it stays slow until I restart. Does anyone else have this problem or have any solutions? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the settings on the CPU control. Try opening the Vaio Power Management and check how the CPU control is set.
Usually, the CPU is set such that it will clock down when running on batteries to reduce energy consumption. If this is the case, the setting could be either adaptive, or battery life. In battery life, the CPU will clock down to its lowest speed, and in adaptive, the CPU will adjust the clock in accordance to the current load.
I hope that helps.
I'm not sure for now on why it's still slow when re-plugged. -
I have noticed this as well. I have it set to adaptive when on battery, yet games and such do run poorly. I have no tried performance mode on battery though. Maybe I'll give it a try tonight.

yeah, i can understand why it would be slow when unplugged, but what i don't get is why it doesn't return to normal once it's plugged back in
