Hi guys, just a quick question for the few lucky owners
Does anyone here know if the SZ160 comes with a single 1Gb memory module or is it 2 modules of 512Mb?
    Thanks for the info!

Are you sure? Do you have a 160?

All specs I have found from Sony state the 160 has one 1Gb expandable up to 2GB. Only the lowest sz standard line are supposed to have two 512MBs.

Alright... thanks BlackG35! So basically, to have 2Gb on this machine you have to trash the ones you get when you buy the SZ... amazing :(

I own a SZ160 and have been using it as of yesterday. I was specifically told by the Sony people that it had 1x1gig chip when I bought it - it is (purposefully I believe) ambiguous in the spec sheet. Turns out that it comes with 2x512 chips - I'm pissed and have a case with Sony support now that of course is trying to weasel out of this. They say they don't "have" 1gig chips (WTF?!?!) and that it is a special purchase that they make for customized models. I am trying to get credited for the 2x512 chips so I can buy another of my own 1gig chips to ave 2gigs (I do digital audio with digital recording of multitracks, streaming of multi-gig samples, etc. so I need all I can get from memory). Sony flat out refuses to swap this for me - and get this - they would charge me $599 for the 1gig chip - laughable!! They better credit me or I'm completely pissed - been a nightmare to order/get this thing and now this...I must say the laptop rocks though and its worth this hassle for those of you wondering ;)

    I have a sz160 and I can 100% confirm that it has 2 x 512MB modules.

I upgraded mine to 2GB myself.

Is the 2 x 512 RAM in the sz160 from store bought 160's or from SonyStyle?

I know Sony has differnt internal designations for store shipped, business sales and their own online models (B, P/C, etc). Everything on Sony's sites seem to point at their laptops having one 1gb chip?

Can people with online SonyStyle 160's and Store (not sony stores) bought 160's comment on what memory they have?

Black35, so you had to buy two 1GB chips? Did Sony credit you for the 2 x 512MB chips they put in there? I think that sucks it comes with 2 x 512.

Could you please post exactly what you installed (RAM) and where you purchased it...price? I would greatly appreciate the info as I plan to swap my 160 to 2GB as well. I have to say...this is an incredible little machine. I've had three other laptops, and there is just no comparison in terms of weight, performance, screen and video grunt.

Thanks for any info about RAM source, price, etc.

It might as well be 2 x 512 chips since they'd only be 533 Mhz. Is it confirmed they can be upgraded to 677?

Well, the Intel 945gm chipset supports 667Mhz. I doubt Sony changed that. The y likely only went with the 533 chips because they were cheaper.

Also, since a couple are complaining about Sony's choice to use 2x512 rather than 1x1G, consider that these machines have dual-channel memory controllers. That means 1x1G will not perform as well as 2x512 chips. It would not make sense for Sony to purposely hinder performance by using a single 1G memory module, just to please the very few that actually need more than 1G of RAM.

Unless Sony specifically spec'd a single 1G memory module for you, I doubt you have a case to get any credit from them. Your best bet would be to return the machine and custom order one with exactly what you want.
