It's been a while since I've had a decent notebook so I am not sure whether to expect this or not.

My SZ1VP (SZ180) seems to take ages to load applications. For example from clicking the Notepad icon I have placed on my desktop to notepad actually launching is in the region of 40+ seconds.

Launching Photoshop CS2 takes 1-2 minutes.

Quitting these apps and relaunching them is pretty much instantaneous (I assume this is because they have been cached). But after a system restart it takes ages for them to load again.

Is this normal behaviour? I know the HDD is 6400rpm but nearly a minute to launch notepad seems a bit silly.

    Thanks for any comments,

    M

BTW - I unsintalled Sony bloat including Norton. I run AVG antivirus and Zonealarms Pro.

mine is SZ18GP/C (or whatever it's called.. the HongKong premium ver.)

I uninstalled norton... i run mcafee 06 and zonealarms pro

i tried opening notepad, it took 2-3 seconds

Right now, while having 4 MSN convo, bit comet, 2 firefox windows (with 4 tabs each), [and all the background stuff like mcafee, zone alarm]i tried opening Photoshop CS2, took 25 seconds

(and i only have 512mb ram in this thing at the moment)

After start up, and everything has settled down open task manager and see what your PF usage is under performance , it should be no more than 250mb give or take abit, if it is go to the process tab and reorder then from most to least and google check which ones are using the most, sounds like you either have a virus or a rogue programme, if its just a programme select it and end process then retry loading a app, if that sorts it unistall what it was and reinstall, if its a virus (obviuosly) do everything to kill it.

notepad should open pretty much instantly regardless of what youve got running, and photoshop on my s460 opens in about 12 secs from cold (just to give you a sort of idea what you should be getting)

Defragging a practically brand new notebook hard drive will do zilch. Even a many, many year old drive will only see a few percentage points of improvement.

Notepad should come up instantly. I just tried loading CorelDraw 12 and it took 14 seconds. Maybe slightly slower than my desktop.

I'm wondering if you have something hung in the background, or if the drive is somehow in some sort of non-DMA compatibility mode, whether your g-sensor is kicking in all the time... or what really, since this is FAR from normal.

thanks guys - yes I suspect there is something interfering here - will try without various layers of antivirus/firewall/anti spyware etc.

    Cheers,

I launched Notepad in what seemed like under a second... I have uninstalled the junk and defragged and ran BOOTVIS... I am not having any problems launching any apps... Running Norton System Works 2006 and objectdock...
