I recently upgraded my SZ270P to a T7400 Merom from a T2400. Everything seems okay except that Sony's Vaio Power Management doesn't really work. No matter which profile you select, there is no difference. The chip is always stepping from 1000MHz to 2160MHz and back. Even if you set the profile to "Home/Office Desk" it does not stay at 2160 with the maximum fan speed. The Fans stay at the lowest setting and are not running at variable speeds even.

I did upgrade the Power Management software from 1.8 to 1.9 with no success at resolving the problem. I have heard that some people re-installed the OS after the upgrade. Isn't that a bit overkill?

I am running the latest BIOS: R0092N0.

Don't know about upgrading issues but are you sure Sony's power management tool does something you need? On my VAIOs it never made a difference so I don't even install it. Vista's built in power management works fine with my Santa Rosa Merom. I only use a tool for undervolting (RMClock).
Might want to verify the real CPU-state with tools like CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/ or RMClock http://cpu.rightmark.org/

Well try Notebook hardware control from http://www.pbus-167.com/. You can set the level where the cpu should change from 1000 mhz to 1333, 1667 and 2000 mhz (depends of course on the cpu) and so on (for each state). You can set the voltage for each state and the multiplier. I only really on that. I only use the vaio power managment to turn off , audio , cdrom etc, when I'm not at home

Thanks Numer0bis, I'll try the program.

Still odd that the VAIO one refuses to manage the Merom.
