Hi. I'm pretty new at this but after installing and removing software, I was defragging my brand new Sony SZ3VWP, I noticed that there were two hard drives C and D. C had 55.88GB of memory and D has 47.98GB. What does this mean? I I want to save data, can I access both of them or just one of them?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

C and D refer to two partitions on the hard drive. You can access both. One might be a recovery partition.

Thanks. So does this mean that I really only have half of the harddrive amount I thought I had? I can access both C & D from My Computer. On C is the usual stuff but on D there are only 3 folders. 1 has a string of numbers, 1 is called DSD Direct and final one is VAIO Entertainment.

Is there a way I can disable the partition - or rather should I?

    Thanks again for help

seems like its the recover partition
yo can delete it after you have made your recovery dvds using the suppied software but if you want to delete it or not is completely up to you
it mainly has all the drivers along with the software that your compuer coes preloaded so that if needed you can restore yor laptop back to factory state

I just had a quick play with it. It acts like a removable disk. I dragged a pdf from my desktop onto it and the original remained on the desktop. I did read that Sony has dedicated partitions for a system restore, but I didn't think it would take up ~50GB. Is there a straightforward way to remove it?

I highly DOUBT that D: is your recovery partition. I have an SZ330 and my recovery partition is 6GB which is more normal in size. Also as mentioned it uses EISA format and is not visible in Windows at all.

From the sizes it looks like your 120GB HD was partitioned into two pieces for whatever reason. This is actually not a bad thing...having a second partition has benefits.

I recommend leaving D: and start saving all your documents to the D: rather than C. This way if you need to reinstall your OS (on your C :) or you want to upgrade to Vista or use Linux, whatever...you can do easily without losing your personal files.

Yeah, I wish my SZ had 2 partitions from the factory. Is there some good software for creating a 2nd partition w/o wiping the hard drive?

If you have Vista, just type "Computer Management" in search and launch it. In there go to Disk Management. Vista's partition editor can create partitions without wiping the HD now!
