I need to start burning disks on the laptop. Am I correct to get CD-Rs at 24X and DVD+Rs at 4X?

Getting CDs/DVDs that have the highest speed rating will not affect your performance - that is, you can get higher rated disks than your drive can burn, and you will burn at your highest speed. Getting disks rated at below your maximum speed can still allow for burning at high speed, but you may have some errors.
-
That is useful to know, thanks. For those who have burned disks(CD/DVD) what speeds do you use and which brand of disks work for you?
-
I have sz360p and have sucessfully used
TDK DVD-R (from Costco).
Great Quality CD-R (from Fry's).
Sony CD-R (CDQ-74CN)
All worked fine and have yet to have a bad burn.
I burned at max speed.
btw Great Quality is a really cheap brand, but it works.
Sometimes Costco will have a buy 1 DVD pack get 1 free. That is only in their cupon book.
By far one of the cheapest DVD's with the coupon. Also if buying TDK make sure it is made
in Taiwan. There are rumors TDK made some in China and are far inferior to the Taiwan made. -
Thanks mc003, I will remember that. Did you buy the disks at the fastest speed available and let the burner write data as fast as the format allows?
-
Yup thats what I did.
Also if you're unsure you can test your burn speed.
Some people say burning slower may give you a better success rate. However, personally I found burning at any rate the SZ seems to be able to handle it fine. -
mc003, I will try that when I shop for the CD-R and DVD+R disks. Any diiference in speed or functionality between the DVD-R and DVD+Rs?
-
This is something I cut and pasted to better explain the difference.
DVD-R:
Benefits: Better DVD playback compatiblity within home DVD players.
Drawbacks: Older technology and less money behind the format means that they come out with faster media and burner technology slower. You will frequently see DVD burners that will support (for instance) 16X DVD+R and only 8X DVD-R.
DVD+R:
Benefits: Faster speeds, more inovations like Double Layer discs (8.5 GB)
Drawbacks: Will not play is some home DVD players. If you know your home DVD player will play DVD+Rs then there is no reason not use them. -
mc003, thanks for the explanation. Since I am initial burning just data and not copying media, I will stick with the DVD+Rs and try the DLs laters.Tomorrow, when I get some blank disks, I may have more question if I have burner problems
-
The only type of disks I could buy in small numbers where from Fijifilm. Both the CD-Rs fail to burn. The DVD+Rs did burn but at a speed of 2.4X not 4X. I presume other SZ360 uses have no problems buring CD-Rs?
-
I have not had a problem.
Try a trial/test burn?
Try at a slower rate? -
I will have to do that, although I think that batch of disks may be defective. I will have to experiment with other brands, as well.
I have too much to back up on a single CD-R so I have time to experiment with the CD burning..
