I just bought a 64gb Patriot SSD Warp v2 drive yesterday for my VAIO.

After installing the drive, the HDD LED is constantly lit. I have tried using a bootable winxp sp3 install disc but the system will not boot from it.

BIOS shows a 64gb HDD installed.

The symptoms are VAIO Logo > long pause > black screen.

Boot order set to Internal Optical > Internal HDD

Do i need a bios upgrade to use it or is it imcompatible with this SSD?

I have successfully installed xp on the SSD on my inspiron 9400 without any issues but want to use it on my VAIO.

    Please advise.

    Many thanks

I'm assuming that everything is SATA. The drive is SATA II, the lappy is SATA I. In theory, SATA II drives should be downwards compatible.

Update your BIOS and try again.

You could also pull the drive and wipe it on another system, although it probably won't help. There may be something in the disk config the sony doesn't like. Only reason I say this is because you can see the drive in the BIOS.

Run diskpart and do the "clean all" option. Takes a while to run, but completely wipes the drive.

Lastly, reset your BIOS to factory defaults. On my older SZ and current Z, it clears the CMOS (I think). I had to do this recently when put a Patriot V3 256GB SSD in the Z. The Windows installer would blue screen until I did this.

Was it very difficult to open everything up and stick the new drive in? I have a few OCZ Vertex's left over from reconfiguring my Precisions and was considering whether to use them in a desktop, or try and retrofit one of my older notebooks - namely the SZ71's.

Could you tell us how you reset the CMOS in the Z? Do you have to crack open the Z or something to do that? Thanks.

No, I just selected factory defaults and rebooted.

As I was saying, I wasn't able to install Windows with the new drive due to chronic bluescreens. I tried pulling the battery, multiple changs in the BIOS (passwords, TPM, etc), nothing worked.

Setting the bios to defaults did SOMETHING the other methods didn't. I'm guessing, but clearing the CMOS is logical.

I put a SSD on SZ3xx and I did not do any firmware upgrade.

Maybe patriot's ssd controller is incompatible.
