A friend of mine wants an SZ440, but with a 7200RPM HD.

If she CTOs one with the smallest 5400RPM HD Sony will put in it and we swap it out for a 7200RPM, will it void her warranty?

And is that swap particularly difficult for any reason?

No, as far as I am aware, the majority of manufacturers allow end users to replace the RAM and hard disk, along with other components. The upgrade itself isn't too difficult. There will be a panel on the underside of the notebook. The hard disk resides under there. So, the panel off, remoe old hard disk, install new hard disk, and then replace the panel. After that, Windows will have to installed again.

I've done it with other laptops, but some manufacturers are weird and make things hard.

Specific commentary from a Sony owner would be good... Don't want to give bad advice to a friend.

Of course you can do a personal upgrade.
    It doesnt void any warranty.
    Provided you dont break anything.
And if you have to send in your laptop to Sony
better yank out d 7200RPM & put back in the original
cause Sony wont be liable if they replace your 7200RPM
for something else during repairs. Same goes for RAM.

Here is a chat session I had with Sony myself (pics)
I was seriously angered after waiting 5min for each response.
It took me a total of about 30mins believe it or not for just
those few lines of questions I posed on them. Sony
Customer Service are Very useless. Like as if that is news.
That is stale news. Welcome to the club!
The price you pay for the sexiest laptops ever known to mankind.

From the transcript you could see how the technician was desperatly
trying to set free himself from my clutches. Not a single question was answered.
You can also see the ever so eloquent & warm greeting (about 5 lines) you get
even before you ask 1 question. Typical Sony Tech speech pattern.

And of course I own a S580P and I speak from live experience and not just on one count

hey Shurefire, why are you such a prick to tech support. he answered your question. If you know Sony doesn't do it at their service centers what the hell makes you think that they will not void your warranty if you do it yourself. Those guys take calls all day from dumb ****s like yourself and sometimes it takes a few minutes in line behind the last jackass.
the Sony SZ has to be taken apart to upgrade the hard drive, there is no simple door on the bottom. it is quite a process if you haven't opened a laptop before. search this forum. there is a good teardown guide.
