    The SZ480 is a premium model; it's lighter weight (3.7 pounds compared to 4.1 pounds), uses carbon fibre to allow the screen to be thinner, and also uses LED backlighting, allowing for a brighter and crisper screen and thinner screen than the non-premium SZ model.

    Outside of that, overall specs, etc. are the same. The higher end one is "better", but it depends how much the extra weight savings and improved screen matters to you.

    Do you mean stronger as in more durable? If so, I wouldn't be concerned with that. The SZ480 is thinner and lighter because it uses carbon fibre, which is a very strong material, and the LED backlighting, which simply requires less space.

    They are both pretty durable, so I wouldn't say to choose the SZ440 simply for that reason.

    Is the SZ480NW7 and SZ480NW9 "premium carbon fiber" or is it just the "black carbon fiber" ? please help me as I need to make a decision within the nest 24 hours on which model to get. I am looking for the SZ with a premium carbon fiber.

    The premium carbon fiber in the 400 series is 491N/X. I think the 480 is just as good, the only difference is you can actually see the carbon fiber in the lid. Keep in mind the 491 comes with a 200GB at 4200 RPM, so if you're looking for better performance I suggest you customize a 480 with a 160GB HD.

    I have the same question as alhinai

    if you look at sony's site:

    http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/Notebooks/SZSeries&dept=Computers

    the premium carbon fiber is listed for only the sz491n/x
    the carbon fiber is listed for 450, 460 and 470
    the magnesium is listed for the 430.

    there is no mention of what kind of material is used in the 480.

    I was hoping that the 480 was a customizable version of the 491 -- as that would make it easier to get rid of all the excess features that I don't need (slow 200gb harddrive, wwan)

    Honestly, the premium carbon fibre is not that big a deal. You have to look very closely at it to even tell the difference, and in normal use you could barely tell the difference in appearance.

    480 is the customizable version of 450/460/470 while 440 is a customizable version of 430, and 491 bascially is the fully loaded version of SZ with a fancy weave pattern carbon cover.

    If you look at the specs and compare the 480 to the 491;
    they are both listed as the same weight (3.72lbs) -- but the 491 is listed as thinner (0.9 - 1.3 vs 1.0-1.5)

    Is this is a mistake -- or is the uber premium model the only model that has the LED screen and the 0.2" thinner body
