I would like to upgrade the CPU on my Vaio SZ491 (specs on signature below) to the new Penryn T9300 CPU to take advantage of the performance increase and extended battery that Penryn offering.

Is this possible and if yes is it a straight forward CPU swap or do I need a BIOS upgrade ?

This is not possible, because your T7400 is a Socket M processor. Penryns are Socket P processors, and thus will not work.

How about upgrading to a Merom T7800? will the SZ491 support it?

    That's correct.

No either. The max CPU upgrade for your laptop is an Intel T7600 (2.33GHz). So it means that for that minor increase, it is just not worth it.

Then I guess it's time to get the new Vaio SZ791N/X :)
