    Hi,

Decided to refreshed my SZ55TN instead of buying a new laptop and needed a couple of advise.

My SZ55TN is a Core 2 Duo, 2GHZ, originally came with 1GB of Ram (DDR2).
Then I've added another 2GB stick in there. This is really long time ago, probably the 2nd month after I've got the laptop back in 2007/8.

Now I've fitted it with an SSD + Windows 7 64bit and thinking I should upgrade it's memory as well, pump it up a little.

    == Questions =======
I did a bit of search and wondering how come no manufacture does a 8GB kit for DDR2 PC-6400?

    Can SZ55TN run with 2 x 4GB PC-6400 at all?

    Thanks

Hi Uncle George, welcome to the forum. The "official" line is that the SZ supports only 2GB RAM, but I think there are folk here (leslieann and rachel come to mind) who at least tried 4GB in there, but I haven't read of anyone putting 8GB in the machine. In terms of manufacturers, I think Kingston might do it, but it'd be stupidly expensive as it will be a rare batch... it's mostly newer kits that go up to 8GB, especially the faster 10600 DDR3 kit. Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable can help you, but a quick <generic search engine> shows that you'll be asking £200 for it over in the UK.

On SZ2 I was able to fit 4GB (3GB visible), most likely newer SZ's could get all the 4 GB available.

Newer models readily accept 4gigs, I have 4 on mine and yes, all is visible.

On earlier models, Sony says it supports 2gigs, because that was all they tested. Intel says the chipset supports 4gigs. For some reason Sony built in a limit of 3gigs into the bios.

On newer models, Sony says it has a limit of 4gigs, because that was what Sony has tested to work. Intel says the chipset supports 8gigs. Supposedly, there is no bios limit on these and I have heard of people putting 6 and eight in them (a few on this forum), but I haven't tried it myself.

There are 8gig kits out there, just make sure they have a good return policy and be prepared to pay for it.

    Thanks.

    I've ordered a 4gb kit. much cheaper than 8gb =)

I'll beef up my desktop instead.

    Thanks once again.

Your laptop has a GM965 chipset and should be able to support 8GB. Other EU and North American models with that chipset can support 8GB and owners have tried this.

It should be able to support that ram but whether it will run at those speeds i don't know for sure.
SZ5 models in the UK though only support 3GB. Asian spec models some were different.
