Speaking of myself....
Here is the issue with the Sony Screens. This in my view, is unacceptable, and the camera is not exaggerating it. FWIW, I have seen these vertical rays of light + dark bands in every SINGLE demo model at Best Buy and Fry's. Every SINGLE one, with some being worse than others.
The macbook pros are piss yellow at the bottom 1/3 to 1/5 in the vast majority of them. I think that it's LED technology that has this problem, although I have no opinion on the m1330 from Dell.
It's going back without reservation or apology from me. I'm not being too picky. Divide the screen into thirds vertically. I think that you can clearly see the ray of light next to a dark band at about the 2/3 mark.

damn, i'm from russia, wanna buy SZ650 N/C, it costs here 2500$, and there is no service for this model. so, if i'd get one, and there will be such bands, i 'd not have a chance to send it back for repair.. but i like sz's, i don't know what to do.
on the second pic. there are significant bands.you know, when you pay 2500 for a laptop, especially sony vaio, you want and expect it to be solid and qualitative, but if these bands are the feature of LED technology, therefore it would calm us, but if it is a spoilage in production, then-shame of Sony. -
An update from another SZ 650n/c owner with screen banding problem. I have the extended on-site warranty that I purchased from SonyStyle. Just got off the phone and they are shipping a new screen to a local technician who will do an on site install. Has anyone else tried this and if so did it resolve the issue?
I'd be happy to update anyone if they are interested as to the outcome.

As a side note, the warranty number for onsite support is much better than the one that sony has on their site -- the onsite guys are 3rd party guys who know what they are talking about and aren't reading off a script
They also shipped me a new AC adapter to fix the shock problem (btw model for the new one is 19V26) -

If you have onsite -- you should have received a certificate of warranty in the mail (I did and I ordered through SonyStyle online) which has the number to call and your warranty information -- You need the Warranty # that is on that certificate in order to make a claim. -
Success!
Technician just left my office after replacing my SZ 650 n/c led screen. Now pretty much perfect, no bands or shadows, very little light leakage coming from bottom of screen. Much improved and the on-site warranty paid for itself already. I wouldn't hesitate to have it replaced if you have a defective screen, I know there has been talk that "all" of these screens have the problem but it just isn't true. This new one is much better.
YMMV

OK, OK, OK, enough - I didn't spend $2000 on a new computer to have one with yellow bands up the screen! So I bit the bullet (you will see what I mean...) and sent it back to Sony Sand Diego for repair. Because I am in Europe and I bought the computer from a US website - to SAVE money - this means I had to send the thing over the Atlantic to get the screen repaired... 3 weeks, and $250 in mailing costs, later I have a perfect SZ! You have to hand it to Sony, they did a great and efficient job fixing what shouldn't have been broken in the first place. But never mind. That's how it goes, I guess. Now I just finished setting up the machine and installing my software, all is well ;-) By the way, I thouroughly recommend the Semi-Clean-Install method for removing the damn bloatware - worked a treat.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to these forums - a Great Resource.
Cheers!

I have the same issue guys... Sending it in today for repair. Mine has yellow banding when the brightness is turned up all the way and greenish-blueish banding when turned down all the way. Didnt notice anything untill I stumbled over this thread.... THANKS EVERYONE

Hmm ok so screen problems. Perfect screen otherwise but on lowest, second and thirdlowest brightness I see 7 approx half inch wide black stripes. Is this normal? Since I cant imagine myself using that low screen brihtness settings this doesnt bug me that much.

that sounds like the led's are being shut off in those areas, thats weird
-
this is extremely common in LED laptops. But it's still not right. I notice it right away. And I've now seen 6 laptops in best buy/fry's and they all have this issue to varying degrees. I assume that those with "perfect" screens can't see this or truly do have no issues.
I went through 10, i kid you not, 10 macbook pros and they all have a yellow tint to the bottom of the screen. CCFL is the way to go for me, to be honest. -
Thanks on your answers concerning the black stripes. Ill take the notebook to the nearest sony center so they can have a look at it.

tuesday: 12(pm) a guy calls me, he's apparently at my home doorstep with the box for the vaio. I tell him that I'll be there in approx 1h. He tells me he's leaving the box there (my neighbour signs it). So I come home check the box and find somewhat detailed instructions on how to carry on the process (its meant that the dhl guy should take it on the first trip). No problems here, call the number on the paper, its out of order gg google it and get a number. 1h later the guy comes and picks it up and I get the tracking number for the box. 8:10 delivered in Mulhouse - France.
I now have 2 diff tracking codes 1 for dhl and 1 case id number from sony.
The guy on the phone said it'll take 10 workdays and my local sony centre guys told me I'll get it back in 5. I'll update when I can get some more info. -
The Sony Centre guy told me the same thing, that it appears that some leds are shut off. I shouldve taken a pic but its a bit too late now -
mine gets FAINT darkened vertical stripes on the lowest setting and only visible on white backgrounds. Its fine to me, and Im not going to waste my time crying about this one.
