Hi. I'm thinking of buying a SZ61MN (the noncarbon fibre one, £300 for carbon fibre is expensive!).

What models from other companies are there with similar specs and a 13" screen? I've had a look at Dell and they seem to be the only ones. Toshiba's 13" laptops lack good hardware, and I can't find anyone else who is similar performance wise in such a small laptop.

    Cheers

You can get everything comparable in a Dell XPS M1330. You won't however, get the hybrid graphics technology present in the SZ.

I believe that LG has some good 13 inch models, not 100% sure if they are comparable though.

!!, that dell looks amazing. LED backlight, 320gig hard disk (is this two hard disks?) and everything I'd ever need. all for £950. what's the catch??

also, i just noticed that it's not that much thicker than the sz carbon fibre one (22.1-33.8 vs 21.8-33). The dell also has 3gig memory as standard.

the toshibas would be competitors if they weren't so ugly... the xps is not THAT bad looking but it still looks like it might be able to fly to outer space if you catch my drift.

right now dell has a really good deal for the xps m1330 (the config u were talking about).

although i have owned both and prefer the sz over the m1330....that is too good of a price and too good of specs to pass up. especially if ur not even the getting the premium sz with carbon fiber, a faster cpu, etc

get the m1330. and the 320gb is a single drive (there up to 500gb for notebooks now, well kind of.)

the 500gb is a nonstandard size - 3mm longer than a normal laptop drive so it wont fit in alot of laptops, but atleast its there. 320gb is the top for industry standard size

mind you 320 is a 5400 rpm drive, the hitachi 7k200 is still the fastest notebook drive available.

I was almost ready to hit the buy it button. Then went to find the dock for it, and couldn't find it. there isn't one!.

The m1330 has no dock connector underneath, so the only "docks" for it are just usb devices. i'll look at teh others mentioned.

The LG P300 is 13.3" and has a 256Mb 8600GS in it. Also an external DVD drive, if that bugs you. Just released in Europe. Some chat about it in LG forum - am thinking about it as a new ultra portable for me (vs m1330 or Sony SZ).

    Petrov.

The lg p300 doesn't seem to be availabel in the uk??
I've just found Dells D630, which granted doesn't look as nice and has a 14" screen, but for £760 here's what i can get:
    2.4ghz c2d,
    nvidia quattro
    14" 1440x900
    2gb ram on one stick
160gb 7200rpm hard disk with shock protection
all in 32mm thickness which is 1mm thiner than the carbon fibre sz7 at it's thickest point. and only two mm added to the width. This is ridiculously cheaper than the sony.

Also it has a port connector, so this laptop seems to have everything i need!
anyone see anything bad about it?

lol... put these laptops next to each other... the dell looks like a school bus and the sony is svelte. The dell also weighs over 5 lbs. It is a more powerful notebook in many ways, but it's palpably larger and clunkier... if that doesn't matter to you then you have no business looking at a sony as you are paying for design mostly.

Oh nice! Congratulations on your new laptop. I thought for sure you are going for the MBP. Did you got it with a $300 discount at Future Shop?

I hope the Vaio SZ780 CTO is available at Sonystyle Canada soon (ie: Feb 29 by someone from Sony Store).
