This 670 performs well, but the grass is always greener. I only use about 30-40GB with Vista - no music, videos, games.
I'm thinking of replacing the 5400rpm hybrid HD with a 32GB SSD, and sticking a 16GB device in the 34mm Expresscard slot for data storage.
There are 32GB SSDs available now with 140MB/40MB speed at $170.
Would that produce a net speed improvement over the original drive?
Does this make sense?

It depends on what brand and type of SSD you are talking about.
Have a look at the OCZ Core series, they're cheap and perform better than any laptop harddrive.
The 64GB can be picked up for $239 after rebates here.
I would not go for 32GB because you want all your applications to launch from SSD too. 64 is the sensible choice. -
I'll second 64GB too.
64GB: Infonec: $275 - $40 MIR = $235

32GB: Infonec: $215 - $40 MIR = $175

That puts it at $5.5 per GB for the 32, $3.7 per GB for the 64 -
WOW! I didn't know about the OCZ product. What an amazing price. That really solves the equation.
How does 120MB/sec read, 80MB/sec write compare with a 5400RPM hard drive? -
Specifications are not really an indicator of real life performance. Better look at the benchmarks. Here you see the OCZ Core compared with Scorpio blue, which is 5400rpm:

Great. I just need to find an OCZ 64MB for sale...
The anticipated availability date and the expiration of the rebate are the same day - 7/31!
Thanks for the guidance. -
Seems even cheaper here:

But also out of stock, except for 128GB. -
Wow this is not a bad price. If prices keep dropping at this rate, but this time next, perhaps a 128 gig SSD will be almost cheap enough to warrent sticking it into a laptop.
-
Well, according to some test data the larger the drive the slower it is. The difference is not insignificant. It appears that the 64GB is where the lines cross: capacity vs. speed.
If only we could buy them!
