Manually uninstalled pretty much all bloatware via Control Panel. Here's what I'm left with on my SZ650:
1. Task Manager (cnt-alt-del, task manager): 67 processes running (I left a few useful Sony ones like Event Service, Camera Utility, Smart Network, Battery, Fingerprint stuff).
2. Memory usage: of 2GB, about 1GB cached and 600MB free. Not sure the difference between these 2. The graphic memory meter in task manager lists 685MB
3. Hard Disk: 36GB used, 105GB free (160GB H-HDD drive). I assume the missing space is for the system recovery partition.
4. Startup tasks (run MSCONFIG): 4 Sony items, 3 NVidia, 3 Intel, 1 Alps (touchpad), 1 toshiba (bluetooth) most of the rest are Microsoft.
How does this compare with people who did a manual, clear vista re-install É
-
Boot time (from pressing power button, to cessation of disk activity and no further "busy" pointer in Vista Business; sidebar on; Speed mode graphics) : 58 seconds
-
*bump*
Anyone do clean install? Please post your results for comparison -
Try the link in my sig. You have a LOT of processes running for a clean system.
-
NinjaNoodles,
How many processes do you have running?
Do you have bluetooth and fingerprint on? -
I don't have a fingerprint scanner, and no, I keep Bluetooth off unless I need to use it.

This is a good thead. Because of all the bloatware the Vaio comes with, it would be nice to know which removal method is best. Hopefully this post will move this thread up to active section (if there is one). Maybe some performance numbers will be good too.
When my SZ is here, hopefully I can actually put up some numbers. -
what is the purpose of sony event service?
I also uninstalled sony smart network -- it actually made it harder to log into the wireless networks -- i had to turn it off and on after turning my comp on to get an actual connection -- vista's built in network profiling and stuff works just fine. did you find any advantages to using sony's frontend? it seemed redundant to me.
I have 69 processes running (including other stuff I installed such as utorrent, aim, daemon, school provided AV, etc).
My boot time to logon screen is 35 seconds and it is 15 seconds after logon to use
sz680 t7300 2gb ram 80g hd no wwan
I followed some of the tweaks that were listed in flamenko's post (i think its in the dell forums) -
here is my observation with regards to sony event service ...
i did a clean installation of vista (retail version) on my sz483. if i do not install the event service package, the following sony vaio utilities will not work properly:
vaio control center (and utilities listed in it)
setting utilities series (which control the special function keys on the notebook)
there are other irregularity which i cannot recall at the moment. -
I went from close to 100 now to 89 processes. I have to get some DVD's to create backup discs so I can perform a semi-clean install.
-
I finally have my new SZ6
. I have exactly 81 processes running. I am going to try either them nlite method or the companion dvd one. I will update my results.
-
I did a clean install and had to reinstate factroy settings
. Tried installing sony drives in the order as stated but couldn't get the Fn keys to work.
Plus after installing just drivers I had 27GB vs. 15GB from factory setup.
After a manual uninstall of a few apps, stopping a fews services I have 62proccesses runng and 33% of ram in use. I used a thrid party uninstall program to clean the reg aswell it did a great job on the reg.
I'll just wait for sony to get the drivers right before I do a clean install. -
I did the semi-clean install. I started with 81 processes out of the box and now I am running at 61 with more dropping as I remove some residual software left behind.
The link for the manual. Read through the thread.

Best of luck. -
Physical Memory: 27% (Out of 2GB)
Hard Drive: 30.6GB used (5.17GB just in the Steam folder. Steam is a video game program)
Start-up tasks: 14 (Bluetooth, Touchpad, and standard M$, Sony, and NVIDIA crap)
I did my own variant of a clean install on my Sony SZ650N/C. It's obviously better than an uninstall. -
-
I think I will make a new thread about the steps, because there doesn't seem to be one thread about clean-installs on a SZ that has them all centralized. -
41 processes and not gonna lie - pretty fast
but i don't have startup programs running - always disable startup programs in msconfig....
i highly suggest it, cuts down alot on processes and your computer starts alot faster. (plus alot of programs run in the background from starting up and you don't even know it, just slows down the computer) -
Now down to 17GB used.
SZ6xx: manual uninstall all bloatware - success?
