Driver Installation
Extract the archive to a removeable USB disk or burn to a CDR. Keep the folder/file structure intact.
After a clean Vista install open Device Manager and and right-click each working and unknown device and select "Update Driver Software" and "Browse my computer .. ".
Make sure "Include subfolders" is checked and Browse to the "Sony VAIO SZ7 Drivers (Vista x86)" folder.
Vista will scan the subfolder and find a driver for an unknown device or an updated driver for a working device if available.
There is no set order, I work my way from top to bottom. There won't be new or updated drivers available for about half the devices, you'll soon work out which these are after you've done this a few times. It doesn't matter if you do select the device, Vista will just tell you it found no drivers.
Do the above for all the hardware devices, even the working ones as there are newer drivers available in the pack.
Utilities Installation
The Utilities are numbered in the above post and also numbered in the archive. That's because the first four MUST be installed in the correct order or the Fn keys won't work.
The rest are just numbered in the order I like to install them. It also helps me to keep them organised, i.e. when I'm refreshing the utilies with updated versions I can keep track of them more easily.
They are also ordered in how important / useful they are. e.g not everyone will want to install 12 and 13 but 5, 6 and 7 should be installed.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Hi Mujja,
I have downloaded the driver ZIP files but when I try to open them, I am not able to open them with either winzip or winrar. Have downloaded them twice just to be sure... same result.
Kind Regards
JB -
Is that all the zip files or the two part files for the drivers?
I created them using 7-zip.
The only other user I know who downloaded them is KarenA who had no problems. Don't know which app she used o view them.
I use 7-zip for all my archives and users haven't reported problems before.
Let me know if you're able to open them with 7-zip or not. -
Ahh, I see 7-zip (missed that one). I will install 7-zip thanks.
Just to let the forum, know I did a complete fresh install of Ultimate on my Vaio SZ71. Used your utils list, so many thanks for that. The only additional software which would not work was the Vaio Update 3, but I mnaged to source that from my recovery disk, so a happy house so far.
With al the Sony bloatware, the machine uses 53 processes (give and take) and still runs very fast... Looking for the Sony delivered WinDVD. Anyone know where to D/L that from?
Many thanks
JB -
I left the Vaio Update 3 out of the pack as it's something I don't install. The updates aren't frequent enough to keep an app running in the background checking for them.
I've got a copy of WinDVD 8 from the Recovery DVD. Give me a few hours and I'll upload it for you. -
I've created a new thread with a full list of the recovery apps here
Uploading just WinDVD for you now. Will post a link here when done. -
Excellent,
followed the steps in your other post and used these drivers, utilities and everything (mostly) works fine!
It's asking me for drivers for my modem, but I can get that sorted once I've finished finding out how to get at the hidden partition on the laptop (seperate thread)
Thanks for the help, much appreciated! -
What modem, th 56k dialup modem or the WWAN adapter?

Here are the links to download WinDVD8. This is the original folder extracted from the Recovery DVD.

Mujja,
Many thanks..... -
i downloaded 7 zip and managed to get the utilities download and the second set of drivers. I cant seem to extract the 1st set of drivers. I can open the zip inside, but it wony allow me to extract the files to the desktop. It tells me it cant open the .zip as archive.
I initially download the .001 file, that i can open with 7-zip, but the .zip inside will only open with winrar, not with 7 zip
any suggestions? -
musl85,
rapidshare only allows max filesizes of 100MB. I had to split the archive in to two parts. You need to download both parts .001 and .002 and save to the same location. Then right-click on .001 and extract. -
hey nice post, but i cant seem to download the drivers because when i try to download them from the site it tells me i have reached the limit for free users, so do i have to pay in order to get them?
-
-
Mujja,
Were you able to extract Click To DVD? I don't see it on the list and would like to put it on my ISO. -
Any word on this?
-
I don't think that app was on the UK SZ7 model. Check the SZ7 Recovery Apps post for a list of the apps I was able to extract.
-
Thanks a lot. Posts like this should be sticked.

There have been over 50 downloads of the drivers and utils.
Guys, please leave comments on whether the drivers worked or not. Any issues encountered or if any extra drivers were needed for different models.
It might be a good idea to add SZ6 drivers to the pack too. Will SZ6 users answer the below questions:
- Which webcam model is used, VCC5 or VCC7?
- Which Bluetooth adapter model is used?
- Any other drivers which didn't work from the SZ7 pack?
And please leave Rep if the drivers were useful. -
Hello,
I tried your method of doing a clean install but without luck. When I first got my VAIO SZ780, I did a clean install with a Vista Business SP1 Retail disc. Afterwards I used the recovery disc to reinstall drivers and softwares. Either that or a combination of disc and download but I totally do not remember. I was able to get the S1, S2, function keys, bluetooth on the utility switch, pretty much EVERYthing worked. Except for one program where I was unable to launch the setting called "When Opening the LCD Screen..." or something. Aside from that everything worked perfectly.
Then I got infected by some disasterous spyware and have been doing clean install at least 10 times already so far. Everytime I could not get anything to work. I couldn't get the bluetooth to show up on the switcher, I couldn't get S1 or S2 to work. Then now even when switching to Stamina to Speed mode or vice versa, there's no dialogue prompting me to restart etc. Just minor annoying details.
The main things I need functioning is being able to switch off Bluetooth in the switcher and to get S1 and S2 working.
Mujja, I downloaded your sets of drivers and software and followed in your order and even followed as such:
Shared VAIO Library
SUS
Event
Control Center
The main reason Utilities DLL was not included in the second part is because I definitely KNOW that I never installed Utilities DLL before. This is because I took snapshots of what was in my Program files and my Uninstall list prior to reinstalling.
If anyone have any advice PLEASE share. Thanks
Sincerely,
John -
John,
I also used a Vista Business SP1 DVD for my clean install.
It's confusing from you post what you have and haven't installed. I have the Sony Utils DLL installed and it shows up in my installed programs list. Please try and install all the drivers and utils as listed. Don't leave utils out.
I have every single device, button and util working 100%, even the open lid setting. There is no reason why it shouldn't work for you too. -
Mujja,
Thanks for the response. What I meant to say was that I've never installed the Sony utilities DLL before and had all the functions working (Brightness, Mute, etc). My recovery disc doesn't even have this app for restore.
BUT I gave it one last try. I reformated, installed a fresh Vista SP1 then used my recovery disc to restore some of the applications and driver. The recovery disc will install all the applications in a particular order (the way you had it listed). Restarted and the buttons still didn't work. I read somewhere here about updating some files from Windows Update in order to get the S1 and S2 working so I did just that. Volia, everything is working perfectly now.
Basically your installation order is definitely correct but if it still doesn't work for some odd reason, try updating using Windows Update and I believe it is a file called "Sony Notebok Control Device Driver." Restart afterwards and everything should be working like new. Just thought you might like to know Mujja. I've tried this twice already.
Thank you everyone for your help and you mujja for the list. Keep up the excellent work!!

I also tried installting drivers and utilities only from the Recovery DVD after a clean Vista install several times and I couldn't get all the functions to work.
Trust me, ONLY use the drivers and utils in my pack an everything WILL work. If not I'll eat this thread
The reason I say this is because different versions of utils don't seem to work with others. The util versions below were chosen after about re-installs of Vista. There are newer versions for some the the included utils but there was always something which didn't work, mostly the Control Center or Fn keys.
For example, the Control Center util on the vaio-link SZ7 page. I just couldn't get this to work 100%. It even seems to be for another VAIO version, I think the FZ, as there are settings for media keys, which the SZ doesn't have. -
Hi Mujja,
Just to let you know, i followed your instructions to the dot and I happily installed Ultimate on my SZ71WP/C. Eveythings works as expected, buttons, lids etc.. One thing I have noticed though is that the buttons only work once the machine has fully booted up (so-to-spk), I guess this is down to the drivers loading up.... QUESTION: Is there a way of loading certain drivers first, or is this controlled purely by Windows?
I do have about 62 processes running mind you, but this is coz I have Adobe installed, Corel Photo Paint, WinDvd, Sony Update... I think these culprits add half a dozen more processes (update agents, activation agents etc..)
Oh, just to let folks know, my bootup and shut down times are fast.... I used UltimateDefrag 2008 by DiskTrix.... awesome utility! -
james, good to know the this thread helped.
i don't think there is a way to control which order drivers & util are loaded in.
do you mean the s1, s2 and fn buttons only work once windows is loaded? if that's what you mean then that's normal as they won't work until the sony utils have loaded and that's only once windows has loaded. -
Mujja,
I'm referring to the brightness and volume buttons... no big deal really, it was just an observation. I do have an off topic question... I see you have a 320gb HDD in your machine.... may I ask which model number and where you got it from? Also my laptop came with 2gigs of RAM as standard, so i'm guessing to upgrade it to 4gb, i need to buy 2 banks of 2gig, which leads me onto my next off topic question.... what spec/brand of memory do i need?
Thanks -
james,
the brightnes and vol buttons won't work until windows and the sony utils have loaded. i have a work ibm thinkpad with buttons for brightness and vol and they work right from when the laptop starts to boot.
the hdd i have is from a wd passport external disk. i opened up the case and swapped the sony 200gb with it. both hdds are 5,400rpm but reviews show the wd hdd transfer rates are up there with 200gb 7,200rpm hdds.
i used to carry around two 80gb 2.5" external disks before. now i can keep everything on the laptop. i've paritioned it with 20gb for vista, 200gb for doc, photos, music & videos, 60gb for downloads and temp and that leaves around 18gb for acronis true image backups.
and the sz 200gb which is now in the wd passport case backs up everything on my 200gb media parotion using syncback.
i bought the ram from crucial.com, ddr2 pc2-5300 which runs are 667mhz. vista 32-bit can only access 3gb which is ok as at work with about 10 diff apps open and some video encoding mem usuage barely goes above 2gb. -
thank you for good data...~ mujja~
i downloaded twice (*** SZ7 - Recovery Apps *** ) but i can`t extract..
May i ask How to extract whole application from the recovery cd?
i use sz79ln...~ -

Vash the Stampede Notebook Consultant
not all the drivers work here.. i got a SZ740 and only a few of the drivers actually installed.
and even the nvidia driver said its for 32 bit...
isn't this for 64bit windows? i might need to reinstall my windows 32 bit vista. -
Vistax86 = 32 bit Windows
-
Vash the Stampede Notebook Consultant
I guess its just not time for installing 64bit windows on the SZ series yet. I hope it changes soon. i have Windows Vista 64 bit just sitting here.. with no use at all. its so sad. -
Mujja, thanks for all your work on putting together such a wonderful set of drivers and guides. Your work on the board is prolific! I have spent quite a bit of time jumping from link to link within your posts and think I have found all the info I need in order to "clean up" my Viao sz750nc. Just sitting idle, my system uses about 50% of its memory. Sounds excessive to me.
These drivers appear to be everything I need. But I was wondering, (as Iam just a little overwhelmed with all the options) what is the easiest way to create the vista disks? I have read you post on creating your own image via vlite, but still wasn't sure which way to go with creating the vista install disks (my system didn't come with any disks). Should I use the back up/restore option?
Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated. -
Thanks for the nice comments.
Unfortunately the links to download the Vista ISO appear to be dead. Keep an eye on the post in the Windows section to see when new links are discovered. The vLite or normal method both relied on a Vista ISO. I myself am using a Vista ISO + SP1 available on torrents with the serial key provided with my laptop.
The vLite method integrates the drivers and gives you the option to remove Vista features which you know you will never use. However, now with the increase in HDD space removing features from Vista to save yourself 2-3GB of HDDs space isn't worth the effort. Also any speed improvements removing those features also aren't as noticeable now with Core 2 Duo CPUs.
I wrote the vLite guide when I only had a 80GB HDD and a Core Duo 1.8GHz CPU. I also had a copy of Vista Ultimate then and removed the Media Center etc which saved me lots of space. There isn't much I want to remove from Vista Business. And you know how it is, you always need something you've removed.

Still kind of tempted to clean install...maybe purchase a P1 optimized vista disk? I still have 89 processes running, I wonder if that would change with a fresh version? -
everytime I extract, it keeps saying the file is corrupt. I'm using the 7-zip one too.
I've downloaded both from rapidshare and the mirrors. Anyone know why? -
okay figured it out! the mirror downloads provided by desean are corrupted. You just have to wait and slowly download each rapidshare file one by one. ^ ^ Thanks again
-
Will this procedure work for the SZ650 N/C (as in original post)?
If not, what modifications are needed? I know their is a thread for SZ4/5.. but I would rather use newer drivers etc. -
Blake,
Thanks for answering the questions in a PM.
As you've confirmed the bluetooth adapter and the webcam are the same models on the SZ6 as the SZ7. Those are the only hardware differences I was unsure about. So all the drivers should work on your SZ. -
Hello Mujja
I purchased a separate version of windows XP pro (my sz71 came with vista family premium).
I try the package of drivers and tools provide on the support website but it doesnt work very well.
Do you know where to get the drivers and hotfixes came with the DVD downgrade to windows xp came with the version of sz71 with vista pro) ?
many thanks -
walkiee, are you asking for drivers for Windows XP or Vista ??
-
Mujja, i asked for windows XP
sorry for posting this here but i cant find any other topic about this -
For the hybrid harddrive, it looks like the Texas Instruments driver has to be installed with the installer. It won't be properly detected when installing with raw driver files.
-
Hi Mujja,
I can't PM you. I have a question. How can I contact you?
