I don't actually have a question but I wanted to thank you for your excellent help here. This thread helped me do a clean install of Vista Ultimate on my SZ7 with no trouble whatsoever, and without all the Sony-sponsored crap on there it's now flying along. Thank you very much!

    carotte69,

I uploaded the WWAN utils and drivers bundled with my UK VAIO here

The utils only work with T-Mobile SIM cards. If you want to use a SIM from another operator I'll dig out another util which works with all.

The WWAN adapter is unlocked to all networks.

Just to update you... using the drivers and utilities by mujja, I was able to install them even on a vista ultimate without fresh install, I already had all drivers & utilities installed from the sony support site, but naturally nothing worked. You dont have to do complete windows reinstall, just follow the instructions in the thread and it will work.

Using the S buttons, I have this idea but I cannot make it work. I tryed to use S1 key to lounch the windows window switcher (down left on the quick lounch), i think it will be good and very usefull feature to be able to use S key to make it work, since for more less all default options that the S keys provide, there is already a key for. If anybody has any idea how to make this work, please advice. I did find there the shortcut of the window swicher program is, but I cannot find the program itself. I think this is feature only with the Aero theme.

The other S key I intend to use for VAIO smart network swicher, has anybody done this?

One more thing, does anybody know how to turn on/off faster/slower the processor speed, ive seen this somewhere, its meant to save power when running on battery. I also think there is the option for the ram bus speed. I did put 4gb ram with higher bus speed 800Mhz, there is this feature where the options are 400 and 533 I think, but what about 800Mhz?
    cheers

    Hi chichich

I've had the Smart Network util working with an S button. You just need to browse to the application in Program Files etc. When I say working I mean the util doesn't load at startup (removed from MSConfig). Pressing the S button whill start it and place it in the system icons taskbar.

I has the same problem with the Windows Switcher, wasn't able to find a .exe for it which is what the S key needs to be mapped too. The only way I can think of it to create a windows shortcut key (CTRL + ALT + ?) and see if there is some way to map this to the S button. I used this method to assign a switcher shortcut to a mouse button.

The CPU speed can the adjusted in the VAIO Power Management util. You need look in the advanced settings, which is part of Vista, and change the max % when running on battery.

I set the my cpu max to 50% when on battery and also changed all the other settings to max power saving when on battery.

I may have already mentioned that in this thread and you're right. You would have though Sony test all the utils work nicely together. My utils pack contains a combination from the SZ5, 6 & 7 series. I found that just a different version of one or two utils would break the S or Fn buttons. I even remember the VAIO Control Center util on the SZ7 page being for a different VAIO laptop model as it have features which didn't exist on the SZ model.

    Mujja,
thank you for all your advices and help. Please let me know if you figure out how to map the S to windows switcher. The idea to use windows switcher with the mouse is even better idea. I use logitech v400, i must say one of the best mouses i ever used. It has tilting scroll wheel and 2 additional buttons, I might figure it out how to use either of those for the windows swichers. I accidently found that Fn+E is dvd drive eject feature on this vaio, i previosly had 2 vaios, non of them had this feature, i was very surprised, or maybe this is normal feature. Also, my sz has the Fn+W/L button, i suppose to be used with the sprint software for WWAN, but it doesnt work now, maybe this button can be relayed to the wireless switcher.
I know about the processor speed, I was thinking about the ram bus speed, cos there is this option to choose the ram bus speed, which is either 433 or 533mhz, and this util is in the sony folder in the setting util series folder in prog files, but since Ive updated the memory on 800mhz, im wondering is it working on 800mhz or i need to adjust this somewhere.
And ive posted on one of your other thread, do your SZ use sim card for the WWAN or is it integrated Sprint?
    cheers

    Hi Mujja,

Is it possible to do this for WinXP?
    Just the drivers and utils?

I got Vista now but I would like to make a second boot with XP.

    Regards

    Back now :)

It can be done for XP but I've sold my SZ7 now and have nothing to test the utils on.

If you want an XP install the easy way then I could send you the links for the SZ7 XP downgrade DVD. However, I'm not sure if the setup will give you options to install to an empty partition without destroying your existing partitions.

You could install the XP version, backup the partition, install Vista and the copy the XP partition back.

I think in the Utilities: 1, 7, 13 are unnecessary.
1 does the same thing as 2 (install SnyUtils.dll but 2 is newer)
7 and 13 are in the Setting Utility Series already. Just need to modify the registry to get it work

You might be correct and a bit more explanation, i.e. registry tweaks would be useful.

However, it's not too much hassle to just install all the utils as Sony intended, you're not losing much HDD space or time installing them. It might even take longer to find and edit the registry keys :)

OK, I uploaded my registry files.
    Tested with SZ71WN/C and SZ71MN/B.
I don't care if I lost some MB in my HDD, but if you install the 7 and 13, The Battery Care Function and HDD Proctection will appear 2 times in the Vaio Control Center. I just don't like it :D

Don't worry about the dual boot. I just want to try XP on my SZ71E/B.

A few months ago u already helped me by giving the links of the downgrade, but I eventually got an error while installing. I don't know where it went wrong!

Anyways, the drivers on the official website aren't 100%.
They only give trouble and headache... :)

Hi, I just got a SZ71XN/C yesterday and want to do a clean istall to get rid of all the bloatware. I can get an OEM disc ISO from somewhere, so I can do a clean install with that and my windows key.

Now, for the drivers and utilities, I am wondering whether I should use the files provided in this thread, or download the drivers as provided on the www.vaio-link.com website (please find a list of the available files below).

Thanks in advance for your advice!
