I'd like to get myself my first laptop, and I'm thinking it will be a Sony. I've got it down to 2 models. I have 1 or 2 concerns that if someone could address I might be able to finalize!
SZ780 Premium: Configured it to have CPU of 2.4, 3G ram, 200GB hard disk drive (7200 speed). Screen size 13.3. Price approx $1800.
VGNCR4000: Configured at CPU of 2.5, 3G ram, 200GB hard disk drive (5400 speed). Screen size 14.1. Price approx $1300. SANGRIA color!
I wanted a decently fast CPU and I can get that on both models. The hard drive is the big issue. I can get the faster hard drive on the SZ but am stuck with the slower one on the CR. Cosmetic wise, I admit it, I adore the sangria color with all my heart and soul. But if it's pokey slow, I won't be so adoring.
Seems like all other things are similar, so what would make the SZ worth so much more? Is it built better/stronger?
Seems like every laptop manufacturer has their fans but what I've been reading all over the web (and I do feel like I've been everywhere today) seems to be a general consensus that the SZ model is something special. Some folks might not like the keyboard or this or that feature, but I hear much more positives on this model than any other so I'd hate to have my head swayed just by cosmetics. Some opinions would be so appreciated.

i looked at the cr and was advised, not by sony, but by knowledgbale techies, that the cr and the other "cheaper" base models tend to be more geared toward mainstream, family use and dont compare to the business models:sz, tz.
i have been told this by quite a few sony resellers and good tech friends, one who worked there.
all inall i am happy wiht my sz, i find it far superior in buld quality to the fz, which i played with, but its an older fz.
i would recommend the sz, but if you really like the color of the cr, then go for it, you can always change the hdd later urself..
the keyboard on the sz is not my favorite. -
Thanks, Niqui. I only just realized (overload of information) that the SZ has the Nividia 8400M whereas the CR just has integrated graphics. That would rule out the CR as far as I'm concerned. I don't intend to play games much on it, but I probably will a bit. I'll be holding onto this laptop for a goodly while, I expect, since it's a complement to my desktop and I don't want to shortchange myself too much.
Guess it's just a matter of sitting tight and hoping for a coupon of some sort; the $1800 is a bit pricier than I'd planned. -
The SZ have superior built quality as its the business model. I think that SZ models are made in japan and CR in china. I dont know this SZ780 premium model, but most of SZs are made from carbon fiber, only the cheapest one (silver) are made from alu-magnesium.
So there is no doubt about this question really -
I don't think there's any doubt that the SZ is superior! I think, though, this is why Sony (and Asus and Lenovo, etc.) have many different model choices so everyone can decide which model is best for their particular usage and their particular pocketbook, and that's what I was trying to do. Still, all in all, I would prefer going the SZ route. Would like to order soon (Mother's Day/birthday/Amazing Girl/GiftToMe) but will sit on it for a bit hoping for a price break/coupon....
