    Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ92S (Japanese) premium model with the Core 2 Duo clocked at 1.83 Ghz. When I install Windows XP ( English version without the service pack), it underclocks my CPU appropriately. However, after I download and install service pack 2, my CPU runs full time at 1.83 Ghz and never underclocks, even when idle.

Can someone tell me what is it about Service Pack 2 that does this? My CPU runs at full speed and get hot, which in turn, runs the fan at full speed all the time. I am also afraid that the CPU running at full speed will also shorten my CPU's life as well. Any advice?

    Cheers,
    kp

Hmm i use SZ90PS but orginal Jap XP SP2 OS. One thing i noticed that forced my CPU to use the full speed always was the "/usepmtimer" option inserted into the boot.ini as described in the Dual-Core optimisation thread.

Removed this and the speed-step? on the CPU came back into effect.

    Hope that helps.
