I have a brand new Sony Vaio S13 with Windows 8 and all the latest updates. For some reason, randomly, at times, the screen brightness with fluctuate abnormally and on it's own without any intervention from me. It's very distracting and annoying and I would like a constant brightness. I thought disabling Automatic Brightness Control in the Sony Control Center and also disabling Intel's Automatic Power Conservation feature would stop it from occurring but as you can see from the screenshot below, both are disabled yet screen brightness still fluctuates. I am using the latest Intel 4000HD driver from the Intel website, not the Sony driver.

I agree with usapatriot. Sometimes, my S13 also just randomly darkens for no apparent reason, even when the Vaio CC auto brightness is disabled and the Intel power conservation feature is turned off on battery and both profiles are on "Maximum Performance". I find that when this happens, if I just simply change the profile to "Balanced" or "Max. Perf.", whichever it wasn't on, then the screen retains normal brightness again. Inevitably over time, the darkening feature will "re-activate" and then I have to switch it to the other profile...and on and on.

There has got to be a bug in the intel driver code. The brightness shift only occurs when you have a screen which mainly has darker pixels. This has got to be the stupidest way to conserve battery power, in my opinion.
