There are 2 security options in BIOS

    1) machine password - if set, need to input password before machine can boot. Cannot get into bios if no password. Seems to be very safe if laptop is stolen, however, HDD can be taken out and personal data cannot be protected.

    2) HDD password - need to enter password for laptop to boot.

If I set both password, I need to enter 2 passwors before it can boot. I don't mind entering one, but 2 is bothersome.

If I set 1 above alone , HDD if not protected.
If I set 2 above alone, machine is not protected (thief can remove the hdd and put in a new one).

Dell laptops need only one password to protect machine and hdd.

Are there any way around it, to enter just one password, and have protection for machine and hdd?

If that is not available to you as an option in the BIOS, then no. This is because only the BIOS will have access to the password that you have set. It would be encrypted and stored away and not made available to any other software, like software that you could use to encrypt your hard drive.
