I would like to know if anyone has done the semi-restore described by BlackG35 on the FE590?

I would like to try it, but am a little uneasy because it seems it was only tried on the SZ. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also did this with some reinstalling of Sony programs to use the shortcut buttons and such.

I have one more question before I do this restore. My hard drive came preinstalled with 5 Sony movies and I also added the Photo Plus package with Adobe Photoshop Elements. If I do the restore, will I be able to reinstall these items also?

The restore will be exactly how your pc came from the factory, anything you added will not be restored.

Well, I completed the semi-restore without any problems. I'm sooo glad I did this since now my 120GB (111GB capacity) hard drive has about 103GB available, where as before I had only around 65GB available. I'm also glad I backed up those pre-installed movies because they weren't on the recovery disks. Although, since I previously unlocked 2 of them before the restore process, now I cannot reactivate the license on those two movies. The other 3 were fine though, even though I don't care too much for them. WEll thanks again to BlackG35 for a great help on this restore.

Glad to know the SZ guide helped you. :)

Were there any differences between my SZ instructions and what you did for the FE series?

No, I followed your directions word for word, they were very easy to follow. The only thing that was differenet was when I came to the step where I was reinstalling applications, I didn't need the fingerprint software. Also I was a little confused when looking for the bluetooth software and wireless switch utility. I thought they were under the driver tab, not the application tab (Stupid me!). Now my computer is running like a dream, thanks again. :p

One more thing, I also needed to change the value of my DevicePath as you instructed.

I need to write an update on this thread. I discovered that after doing the semi-restore, if I tried to play a DVD, there was an overlay error and the screen was black. Here is a link to this problem and the fix that worked for me. Wondering if anyone else had this problem after doing a semi-restore on the FE.
