I'm in need of repair on my FW cto so I guess I'll send in to the Sony repair center in San Diego. Before I call, can you guys who've done it before tell me how it goes? Do you have to pack the notebook yourself or do they send shipping materials for you? Are replacement parts generally new or refurbished?

The problems I have with my FW are:

    - Broken "barrel" on power button side
    - AC adapter socket loose causing intermittent loss of power and buzzing sound like it's short circuiting
    - Rubber feet fell off of battery (extended version)
    - Static from speakers possibly caused by AC adapter short circuit issue

    Thanks

I think usually they send all shipping materials so you have to pack it yourself, if not then you have to call to arrange for it again. Just make sure to take out the hard drive just to make sure your data is secure. Parts are refurbished.

Sony will send the box and shipping label. During the repair process your hard drive will be reimaged, so all the data will be lost. You can expect some scratches on the lid too (this happened to my FZ).

Data is not always lost. I just received my UX390N back yesterday after sent it out on Thursday for LCD replacement.
I received it back with a black sony folder containing all paperworks, some maintenance instructions and a new cleaning cloth. All my data is still there even it's not important. But anyway, I recommend you backup all data you need for just in case.
Their service is great IMO. This is third time I have been serviced like this. Previous services were for T250 and FE550. They are doing a great job I think.

Their repair service is pretty hassle free. They ship a box out to your via fedex overnight, inside of which is this cardboard and plastic armature that holds your laptop snugly in place. You then put it back into the box and stick on the prepaid fedex label that comes with the package and send it to them. I just sent my Z in for service (bad bios flash) and got it in 4days even though they say it can all take up to 10 business days from the day they recieve it.
