Hello everyone, having a real nasty issue with my VAIO Z. On a road trip this morning the road was really bumpy while I was using the laptop in a car. Now, there was nothing wrong with my screen at all. When I got to my destination and turned on my laptop, it made a clicking noise and was difficult to open. After turning on the laptop, it turned out that half the screen was darkened. Sometimes it flickers too. It seems the right hinge has been damaged (I have attached screenshots too). I am currently working in africa and this has got me wondering what to do. I'm not sure what to do about this. wondering if it is a problem with the screen connection cable or something since the entire screen flickers when I move the screen back and forth. Help.

looks to me like the cable got damaged when the hinge was damaged. I'd send it in for service.

No beapus, I think his screen looks cracked to me. Other than that, he got the right hinge damaged and the display cable goes through the LEFT hinge. Nothing you can do about this other than exchange it on your own for approx. 500$ or let it do sony for even more if you don't have an ADH warranty.

In the first picture you can see some color came off from the barrel hinge. I suppose that the right metal part around the power button that looks totally deformed rubbed on the hinge and put some friction on it. When you opened the laptop, you must have pushed against that higher brake momentum in the hinge, your screen flexed too much and cracked. This was most likely the event the clicking sound you have heard came from. Picture 3 shows that the crack goes from the lower right display corner in a hill like shape to the left, first up and down, ending between the N and Y letters.

oh dear. does this mean I should get a new screen and chasis? the laptop is perfectly fine when connected to a monitor. Wondering what to do now. Do you guys know anyone who can help fix in singapore as I do go there a lot and I have exhausted my warranty. thanks

@oyro - I would have thought the display cable would go through left and right sides? this is really bad.

Yes, unfortunately. It is just like that: Through the right hinge go 2x WWAN (if you have a WWAN model) and 1x WLAN, through the left hinge go Camera, LCD and 1x WLAN. See picture of disassembly guide:

Maybe you can bend your aluminium case back into shape so you will just need a new LCD.

yes I think I'll do that. I think I'll be patient and wait till I get to singapore. Sending it for repairs over here could mean losing the laptop, hinge and lcd screen as well. Thanks pyr0. I'm already getting over it. these things happen I guess.

just one more question. is there any place I can have my laptop resprayed. It's got quite a few scratches on it and I'm sure while fixing the aluminum casing new scratches will appear.
