Hey guys, headed on a road trip soon and i would like to know if this is a good idea.

My Sony Vaio Fz290 isnt shock resistant so, as you know shock can pretty much mess up the hardware.

I was thinking of putting a pile of towels / or clothing underneath my laptop while on my knee to kind of absorb the shock while on the road.

Would this still cause harm to my laptop?

That would be a poor idea if you do not have a hard surface on top of the clothing/towels as it would clog the vents on the bottom and possible sides there fore causing an overheating issue.

Would this method be fine if my laptop somehow doesnt overheat?

Just toss a big book or somthing underneath the notebook and you should be fine

I don't think you don't have to worry about shock damaging your laptop. You'll probably throw up before shock damages the laptop. Remember, there is something called SUSPENSION to absorb the shock.

as long as its on your lap that should be fine. Just because it doesnt say shock resistant doesnt mean that it cant even handle being on your lap while in a car.

    just my 2 cents

I was using my SZ in a car on a motorway - it was perfectly fine, never once did the shock protection spring into action.
If you place your laptop on a table it may though.

So unless your going to travel across potholes or old concrete motorways you'll be prefectly fine with your laptop on your lap.
