At the moment I have order for a Dell M11x in but since it's taking 20+ days to deliver. I'm having second thoughts and thinking of canceling and buying a Sony Z instead

Basically the M11x is to replace my Dell 1210 XPS which is on it's last legs it's was going to be a light gaming(WoW and CoD4 MW2,fallout 3) and work (Excel/work/VB)

But I'm thinking that that I need to take the machine to work and to be frank the M11x is a bit too bling

Would the Z be able to handle the gaming ok and how does the battery compare to the M11x ? and I understand the M11x battery isn't easily swapable

    any thoughts ?

I'm not 100% sure about battery...but I own the new Z and its gaming capabilities are superb. I was infact just playing mass effect 2, and before that modern warfare 2. The games you listed will run perfectly without a hitch. I hvn't overclocked my card because I haven't felt the need to. Since everything is running so smoothly. I'm not sure if you should cancel or not, but portability wise the Z is in my opinion as good as it gets for what it offers in return.

I was also in your boat and cross-shopped both laptops. I played with an M11x for awhile and here were the reasons I decided to buy the Z:

    - The chiclet keyboard is a lot more comfortable to use for longer durations on the laptop
    - The anti-glare screen on the Z made it far less straining to use in all conditions
    - The lighter Z made it a lot more practical to lug around in my backpack with other books.
    - The Z looks a lot more professional
    - Z has a much higher res so more real estate when multi-tasking.
    - The i series cpu is more future proof than the Su7300.

In terms of gaming, my Z has been exceptional for what I wanted it for. So far L4d2 runs great on medium settings at native resolution and MW2 has been great as well. The fact that the battery in the M11x is not easily swappable was also a large con. Having the freedom to buy another battery when this one dies is very comforting.

    I vote for the Z =)

I just can't see myself paying an extra $1000 for marginal differences. But since money is not an issue then go with the Z.

I'm getting 40FPS on Bad Company 2 with medium settings. That says a lot because that game is a CPU pig and runs like crap on a desktop with a dualcore + 4870.

I would never buy the M11 over this notebook, the size is so perfect.

well the sony is faster processor wise. the su7300 really shouldnt be used in a gaming system.

Another alternative is the upcoming Acer TimelineX, which should be more powerful as a gaming machine than either of these two. I'd definitely pick the Z over the m11x, though. The m11x is probably better as a gaming machine than the Z, but the Z wins in absolutely every other aspect.

I think the Dell M11x is a nice machine...if only they'd put a serious CPU in it. I have the Z11 (see my signature), and it has run everything I've thrown at it, mostly in native resolution. These include Bioshock 2 and Crysis, though Crysis drops visible frames at native resolution. Dropping it down to 1366 x 768 resolves that, though. Still very impressive results, given the demands that Crysis places on a computer.

Oh, and you won't believe how much faster levels load when using an SSD. Since these are sequential reads, it usually loads before I'm ready - especially in Bioshock 2, which displays hints during load time.

Just buy the Z. :D You won't regret it.

    What's marginal?

    • The Z has a larger, more pixel dense display yet is lighter (both flavors).
    • The CPU is faster, even with the 540M
    • There are better SSD options
    • The Sony has an internal optical drive
    • The Mx11 only has fast ethernet, no GIG-E

You can get the Sony CW26/27 (Core-i5 + GT 330M) if you cant justify the extra $1000.
