Im getting a new laptop for college, so i wont need it till August 24th and i want to get a 13in sony vaio sz, but now since there coming out with new models, is it worth waiting for and are the prices gonna be similar? Also which model is more like the SZ series, and is it going to be carbon fiber? Thanks ALOT.

There's lots of details about the (expected) specifications of the new models in the many recent threads about them.

I believe the Z series will be the premium 13" model, so I would expect it to have a carbon fibre version.

It's probably worth waiting a bit if you can, because even if the new ones aren't what you want, you can bet retailers will be heavily discounting the current SZs when they are replaced. :)

Addition to this, if you get disappointed with SR/Z series for some reason, you can always turn to SZ.

One thing you should consider is (this is Sony's strategy) that Sony will not imediately introduce their TOP SR/Z series models. From the past experience (let's take SZ for example) they always go with strong but not ultimate solution (for SZ you have had 2.1 GHz for long time, then 2,2 and 2,4 and at the end they have introduced 2.5 GHz). If we take a timeframe for this, I would say top models will not be introduced before late fall or just before Christmas.

As for me, if they don't present SR in Carbon fibre outfit, there is no reason to change my SZ71 (but then I might like SR soooo much I buy it instantly :))

There will probably be some really good deals on the outgoing SZs when the SRs and Zs arrive.

I don't mean to sabotage this thread but I am tempted to buy a SZ140 off of CL for asking price of $650 - 2 Gb, 100 Gb HD (5400 RPM), and New Battery....Good Deal or will I regret buying an older model?

More or less, yeah you're going to regret buying an older model.
If you don't want to spend too much money, I suggest you buy a Dell XPS M1330; considerable specs for good prices.
If you're even considering buying something as old as the SZ100 series, then I hgighly recommend the m1330 in terms of price.

I totally agree. On the other hand any early adopters for the new series are pretty much going to be guinea pigs for the rest of us. :p If there are hardware issues it's likely to emerge in the upcoming models.

Only if you happen to be at Berlin's presentation :). New Vaio's will be available mid August (plus add 10-15 days for delivery - for customized versions).

I called www.notebook.de (Germany) and they gave me this info. I always buy from them (FS, FZ, SZ) as I like to customize my laptop.

I want to add one more thing: I don't know about US, but in Europe as soon as new range of Sony laptops are out it's pretty difficult to obtain "old" models. I remeber when FS was introduced, at that time (few weeks before hitting the stores) I was looking for A215z model (also 15.4") but it was IMPOSSIBLE to get it (like it never existed). Those days A215z was real killer look (check these images below) comparing to FS series which I bought at the end, but didn't like it that much. You should also consider this.
