Hi
My new FW490 came installed with Windows Vista 64 Home Premium SP1. I've read that Verson SP2 is available from Microsoft, but it does not appear in Windows update or on the Sony Download site. Has anyone upgraded to this version on the FW490?

SP2 has been proven reliable on ALL manufacturers and many models. Go for it with your FW!
cheers ... -
I may.....I find it a bit strange that there is little discussion on this site. Also, I was unable to find anything about SP2 on Sony's support site.
-
Cause there's really no reason not to install it.
-
Thanks. I'm going to check with Sony.

Installed SP2 for Server 08 on the RTM release day for my Z. Not a single problem ever occurred.
-
I installed SP2 on my Z and the sidebar gadgets constantly changed their positions each time my Z was rebooted. I could not stand it and I went back to SP1.

Folks, what is odd about the OP is that Windows Update has not offered up SP2. It should have by now.
Gary -
That only happens once you've installed every recommended update and the such, at least that's what I've experienced.
-
I've installed all the recommended updates, and have not yet received the SP2 update alert.
-
Same thing happened to me with my new Vaio SR. I just manually installed SP2 last night though and haven't run into any problems.
-
So just download it direct and install it.
You're sure you are still on SP1 right? -

So just ignore the fact that it isn't being offered up by Windows Update, charge ahead and hope for the best? Sorry, that's just not my way of doing things. I really think the OP needs to determine WHY it is not being offered up. Something is amiss if it is not showing up as an update.

I've reinstalled vista quite a few times and sometimes it gives SP2 and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it happens the first day I install and update it, other times it takes weeks. I've never understood why it differs so greatly, these examples are pretty much on the same machines.
Point is, take Acronis or some other tool and backup the entire comp, install SP2, if it runs awesome then great if not then restore backup. -
I'm sure. I'm in the process of downloading the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista first.
-
Just download it manually and install it. SP2 includes all the vista updates since sp1, so if you missed any you'll get them in SP2.

After downloading and installing the system update readiness tool, I checked for windows updates again. SP2 was not there. So I downloaded and SP2 from the MSFT site. The installation went fine and so far everything is working normally. The system seems a little quicker, but that could be my imagination.

Don't install any vista it's no good
-
It wont show up on Windows Update if one of your drivers are incompatible with SP2 (usually audio drivers) or its missing a pre-requisite update.
-
All my drivers are up to date, and it still didn't show even after installing the system update readiness tool. Sp2 is running fine after a manual installation.
-
Yes i was just saying the same thing happened for me for SP1. The audio drivers wouldnt let SP1 show up on WU even if they were the latest, so i had to use the standalone installer and it worked just fine.
-
See, nothing to worry about.
Thanks for the insight.
Should I install Vista SP2?
