Should I wait for the next X series or buy today?

    Hello,

I have a client who has a 2GHz x series laptop they bought a couple of months ago. They want another laptop of the same series. They can wait a month or 2 as it is just going to be a spare. The current X series 2GHz is mighty slow and I have no idea if the new model is going to be any faster or just as slow, so I don't know if I should wait. I don't know if Sony has a preorder page up for the new X series.

    Thanks

Since Intel has not roll out new CPU, the "new", or more appropriately, the 2010 Spring X series are just the same as the 2009 Winter ones, with different lid options. You are not going to see anything really new till Intel rolls out something new.

Thanks - for some reason I thought they were putting a pinetrail processor in the X series.

The new Atom chips do not offer any noticeable performance boost. They are still pretty rubbish.

Pinetrail isn't Z-series successor. 2Ghz Z550 is more powerful than N450 and may be more efficient as well.

Thanks - that is good to know. It is a shame there isn't something better coming soon to the X processor line up. The laptop is VERY light and great for travelling if you travel very often but the processor is just too slow. Just copying files even though it has an SSD drive is painful. Completely maxes out he CPU - copying files!

I use mine when travelling, it's more than adequate for general internet use & MS office. I don't find copying files to be an issue. I copied around 12GB the other day, CPU usage was high, but the CPU is there to be used so it doesn't matter if it maxes out now and then.

I am between the X series and the P. But I am waiting for an upgrade for those models because it passed quite some time from the last refresh.
Anyone knows something more? Maybe Nixon?

    @armadilo,

Oak Trail platform haven't been announced yet, is not official!

Well, Sony upgrade their models every 3-4 months. Every series had this upgrade in the CES and later on, but not the X series and the P.

I thought that they gonna have the Pinetrail platform refresh as well as all the other netbooks, but not. I am waiting for the Z-series succesor, perferibly with a different graphic card than the poor GMA 500.

The X series is all about stamina and portability. The on-board graphics are fine for this type of laptop. There will never been a battery-draining graphics solution in a machine like this.

The Pine Trail refresh doesn't bring a performance increase.

And if performance and graphical capability is important to you, then the X is definitely not the machine for you.

I know that the X and the P are for basic things, I have a Vaio Z for performance. But I wouldn't like to buy one and after one month comes a refresh of those. Is from October that Sony doesn't refresh these two series..Maybe they are not selling good, and they discontinue them?

What is keeping me to pull the trigger to the actual models, is that I read users complains about the video performance. And I don't intend 1080p hd..even with youtube videos in full screen mode, is imperfect. For me this is unacceptable, the video performance should be flawless.

To be fair, the YouTube issue will be resolved soon when Adobe release an update to Flash (10.1 I think). So the issue isn't hardware, it's software.

I don't think the X is a big seller, but it does show off what Sony can do. I got comments about my Z, but nowhere near the amount of comments I have got by friends/colleagues/randoms about my X. People love it until they find out the cost :D

I would definitely like a faster processor in the next X laptop I purchase for a client. I may not be able to wait that long but it is always good to know. I'll see what I can find on the oak trail.

I'd like to see an update to the 11.1" TT. It would still have the small form factor, but give people the option of performance that the X lacks.
