    Hi,
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I had a pretty high spec at the time vaio built about 5 years ago and the model number on the front is VGN-FW5. I would like to change the hdd out for a 240G SSD and then replace the optical drive with a 1TB HDD.
I am nearly there but before I hit the buy buttton I need some help understanding a bios issue that I keep reading about. I intend to install a clean version of Win 7 onto the ssd and use the hhd drive for photos etc. Apparently I need to enable AHCI to get the new ssd to work. I have read that you cant do this in the sony bios, is this true / a problem? Is there anything else I should be aware of?
    Many thanks.
    Chris

Hi, are you referring to vgn-fw51zf? If yes, I have the same model and have done exactly the same procedure that you describe. I moved the pre-installed hdd to the optical drive place using a special caddy (make sure to get the ones that fit properly - not the super slim ones - and keep the bezel of your OD to replace the flat bezel of the HDD bay) and installed an ssd in its place. Then installed a clean version of win 7. I don't remember having any issues with the bios (or it was something very easily addressed - hence forgotten :)). I think you should go ahead, you'll see some big improvements in performance with the ssd.

Oh and an other minor mod that might interest you is this: http://www.amazon.ca/GMYLE-ExpressCard-Express-Adapter-Windows/dp/B004649V8I You install it in the expresscard slot and you get some faster usb ports (not as fast as usb 3.0 but much faster than usb 2.0).

I think with these you will be fine for an other couple of years with this laptop, it was a good buy. I just ordered a new laptop after almost 5 years with the vaio, but I'm definitely going to keep using it as well.

    Cheers,
    M
