I have a 3 month old Vaio SVE1713Y1EB which is great except for:

if I put it into sleep mode, as I like to do if leaving my desk for an hour, when I wake it up, some of the USB ports simply won't work, won't recognise an inserted hard drive. If I restart, all is fine. (Curiously after sleep, the remote mouse and keyboard still work fine and the receiver for those is connected to a USB port)

I should be grateful for advice on what settings might stop this from happening please

(Note: I have to put the Vaio into sleep mode manually because the power setting which should put it into sleep after 30 minutes of no activity, never does so - although the screen does go blank after 10 minutes as it is set to do. This is the next problem to solve)

    Spec is
    Sony Vaio E Series SVE1713Y1EB Laptop, Intel Core i7, 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB
Running Wondows 8, not yet upgraded to 8.1
