Is it possible to slipstream Vista SP1 into the recovery discs of Sony VAIO laptops? Can anyone post the steps please?

You'll have to 'extract' the basic Vista image from your hard drive using vLite, and it *may* support SP1 slipstreaming. Sorry, but I'm not very sure about the process.

Unlikely! From what I've read even MS cannot slipstream SP1 into Vista RTM.

If this would work one could manipulate the recovery discs accordingly, too. (Probably not worth the extra effort, though, because SP1 + bloatware is still bloatware.)

So IMHO there are 2 choices, none concerncing Sony recovery discs.
    1) Upgrade: Installing SP1 and afterwards capturing the OS into an image file (using free or commercial software)

    2) Clean install: getting Vista incl. SP1 disc or downloading such a disc image when available. Volume Licensing customers have access to the full version of Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 for weeks. Maybe Vista trial downloads will follow soon.

Just another reason why I recommend learning to install an OS and stuff yourself. It'll pay off in the long term and reduces dependencies on Sony or other companies.

There is zero, zip, nada chance of doing this with the Recovery Discs. They are in a proprietary format.

The person who said that Microsoft cannot slipstream SP1 into Vista RTM is 100% wrong. It has been done and is available directly from Microsoft to OEM's and has been for a little while.

The third party tools used for slipstreaming that are available to us mere mortals, are just not able to do the job. (At least at this moment any way. I suspect even as we type, there are folks working on this.)

IMHO chances are greater than zero, it's just a lot of work. You can read, apply and extract those recovery image files manually – been there, done that. Files are basically in Microsoft WIM format slightly modded by Sony. I use ImageX/WIM technology to create and modify my own Win OS images.
So theoretically you could create 'Sony style' recovery discs. I wouldn't do it since creating a bootable WinPE or Linux disc incl. imaging software and tools is easier, free and a lot more versatile for me. Own style recovery partition is basically same work – just a light OS plus tools and saved image files.

Source? Why would an OEM ever want to slipstream rather than applying 'Vista SP1 integrated' directly? AFAIK OEMs already got the new integrated discs so it's not their problem.

Yeah you are right. I should have said APPROACHING zero. The time and effort, as you said would not be worth it.

The "Vista SP1 integrated" disks are what I was talking about when I said that OEM's had a copy of Vista with SP1 "slipstreamed" in.
