Hi All:
I just bought an S460 with XP Pro, and am having trouble with my wireless connection. When I first boot up/log on, the signal strength is "excellent" and the speed is 54 Mbps. But then the speed starts to go down to 24, 5.5. and even 1 Mbps (but the connection is still "excellent." In my experience, anything below 42 doesn't really work at all. What's odd is that my Toshiba (XP Home) gets 54 Mbps routinely, irrespective of whether the Sony is also running and connected or not. The Sony, on the other hand, is slow regardless of wither the Toshiba is connected.
Any ideas on why the Sony is running so slow? Does it have to do with the XP Professional? Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?
Thanks for the advice,
Dan

i am not sure if your wireless card is from INTEL . my one FS620 got this 'real connection dropping but shown excellent signel' when i got this laptop.
you can try to tune the power management of your card to MAX PERFORMANCE.
this way this can give more power to the card and my connection is improved quite a lot .
before tuning, every hour i have dropping for many many times.
after tuning, i reset my router about 2 times / week .
you can try.
Solution:
Contact the access point vendor for an updated software which corrects the problem.
this is the note from INTEL:
SOLUTION:
As a temporary workaround, manually set the adapter to CAM (continually aware mode), which disables the PSP capability. To do this, in either IntelĀ® PROSet for Wireless Software or the Network Control Panel Applet (NCPA), in the power management section, uncheck the DEFAULT / AUTO selection and set the slider for HIGHEST / MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE -
The solution to your problem is quite simple.
I have had same problem.
1) Check your intel wireless b/g driver version. This can be done by right clicking your computer icon and properties then to hardware -> device manager. Click on Network Adapter-> Right click on 'Intel R Wireless B/G connection' then to properties. Click on advanced tab. On the bottom it should say Hardware version: x.x.x (Mines 5.1.4)
2) Once finish acquring your version, now take a visit to Intel website. (Look for hardware for wirelss b/g )
3) Download the latest hardware or if it matches your current version, download one before that one. Bascially download different version.
4) Remove your current Intel Wirelss B/G connection by unistalling from device manager (read #1)
5) Install the downloaded Intel wireless hardware
6) This will not 100% gurantee the fix of your problem nor will it remain connected all times. Mine disconnect every 3 hour or so.
7) Any questions? post on. -
Thanks for the advice. For some reason, even after I remove my current driver and download the new one (9.0.2.25) from the Intel site (or from the Sony site for that matter), it doesn't take. That is, when I reboot, it still shows that the old version (5.1.4) is installed. I've tried this a couple times (with and without assistance from Sony tech support, which was not much help).
Any advice?
Thanks,

I had this exact same problem...
I downloaded the new drivers from the Intel site and installed the drivers and all the software. I let the Intel Software handle the device instead of Windows and it's been working without a hitch ever since. Rarely dipping down to 24Mbps but even then, there is no noticable performance drop. -
Ok, add me to the list
I was experiencing the same kinds of drops in throughput and disconnects as described by dnlerman.
My S460P has the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (Hardware Ver 5.1.4)
It came loaded with the driver ver. 9.0.1.9 (10/29/2004)
This morning I downloaded and installed the latest driver from Intel's website, which is driver ver 9.0.2.31 (07/19/2005)
I hope I'm not speaking to soon, but all morning I've been able to surf wirelessly at a consistent 54 Mbps with no dropouts.
On Intel's website they state many times that they recommend you use the OEM driver provided by your laptop manufacturer instead of their generic driver. Since, I couldn't find any references or recommendations on Sony's website to update this driver, I hope there isn't some 'gotcha' that surfaces later. However, in the meantime, it worked!!!
