I am interested to see how fast a SSD really is, compared to HDD. For that I did a benchmark.

    This is the benchmark:
    -Cold boot.
-Bios set to boot from SSD, not searching for other devices.
-Firefox is put in Startup folder
    -I've used XP Pro SP2.
-Measure time from pushing powerbutton to Firefox ready.

The specs are: 1.2 Ghz, 2GB 533 mhz, 32GB SSD.

From pushing powerbutton to Firefox done launching I timed it at 27 seconds. (Will do it more accurate later).
    Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THd0-0Alu4M

I'd like to know how big the difference is with a 5400 rpm HD, and the 4200 rpm. Anyone want to measure?

(I am not sure if Bios version is important. I don't know mine)

very nice video phil. it just goes to show how much faster (at least twice as fast on boot) XP is over Vista. But I can still live with boot time of under a minute running Vista on bootup.

I am curious as to what are some of the other boot times for 4200/5400/7200 drives, and state which OS you're using.

Great job Phil. Are you sure you gonna sell it? :)
How come you don't use the battery on the videos?
Can't help you with your thread cause i have SSD also.

Vista boot up at 45 seconds with a 32GB??? Unheard of!! lol. See my review below; I think with Vista Ultimate I am around 27 seconds....actually it fluctuates between 27-34 max

Your Dell is propably really fast, we here are talking about TZ with Ultra low voltage CPU's, it's a different ballgame. That's why TZ weighs 1,19 kilo.

Possibly your Dell has another Bios wich is another reason the comparison does not make much sense.

And please note that my idea is to not just measuring boottime, but include launching of Firefox aswell. This way we can be sure that booting has actually finished.

I want to make sure the buyer gets a brand new battery. The best way to preserve a battery is not using it, in my opinion.

Please measure with launching Firefox included.

I know this is comparing oranges to apples, but I tried my 1 year old TX-770P, with most of the sony's bloatware. Running win XP SP2. I have few applications in startup folder, like tclock, objectdock, rainlendar and firefox. Total of 60 processes in windows task manager. Processor 1.3 Ghz, memory 598 MHz, 1.5 GB. HDD is standard 4200 rpm. 80GB, 75% full. It took 2min 45 sec. It makes me sick. I love this laptop, but its time for a new one.

Sounds to me like it's time for a clean install. Not for a new notebook.

If you buy a new one you get the same bloatware. I did a clean install on my TZ.

how old is it? why dont you try doing a clean install of windows xp sp2 all over again. and defrag the hard drive. maybe you could make it a bit faster. i dont think it was that slow when you first got it

I have it for a year. It was almost that slow from the beginning I did uninstall lots of stuff. I know I should do a clean install, but that requires lots of time. I have some programming software (AB) which is a major headache with moving licenses and such. I like the looks of the new model and and would kill to have camera built in. As of right now this is one more thing I have to carry in my bag.

Don't get me wrong. All licenses are legal. I use this laptop for work and I can't afford to have anything hacked or illegal. I had a very hard time as it is to get permission to use my own computer. I agreed to allow my IT department to inspect my laptop at any time, and they are compensating me. I think this is best of both worlds. I can have my own software and I can use it for my own purposes. My company is very strict about stuff like that. One of my coworkers got in trouble for bidding on eBay using company laptop.

Couple of issues I didn't mention and they are a show stopper: some of the software I have to have will work only with XP and a hardware wise WWAN card has to be changed to cingular. This will not happen overnight, I would have to build it myself. This means keeping two very expensive notebooks for some time.

Airport lounges are not the best places to work on laptop.
That's where I am lately spending my weekends. (seems like anyway)
It's been hectic summer, usually I spend little more time in my office. If it wasn't for that I would order it a while ago.
