I have the Vaio FZ260E/B with T7250 processor and Nvidia 8400M GT. The problem is that the fan is loud and constantly increases and slows in speed.

I have tried using a Zalman Notebook Cooler, but this doesn't seem to help at all with cooling, and makes no difference to the fan speed/noise. I have also tried "Speedfan", but its fan speed control function does not work on Vaio's.

Is there a software program for fan speed control which would work on a Vaio FZ? Otherwise, is there a different solution for making the FZ fan run slower?

    Two thoughts.

    1. If the computer is six months or more old then the cooling systme may be getting blocked by dust. Then, however hard the fan blows, it can't get rid of the heat. You can try sucking / blowing the muck out with a vacuum cleaner / can of compressed air.

    2. Reduce the heat being generated by undervolting the CPU using RMClock or similar. This does not reduce the CPU's performance.

iv had the FZ for a while now.. same processor but with a 8600m gs.
Iv had the same "problem" for a while, and it does my head in at night, however if you put it under power saving mode, it virtually goes quiet.

John: I have tried compressed air but it did not make any difference. I am interested in the undervolting idea. I have been searching around to try to find a good tutorial on how to use RMClock for a core 2 duo processor, but they all seem very advanced and technical. Do you know where I might be able to find a more simplified guide?

Singh100: I have tried running the notebook in "maximum battery" power plan but it doesn't seem to make any difference - maybe runs 1 or 2 degrees cooler but fan is still noisy.

Mine sometimes does this however haven't heard it for a while. There have been many threads about this issue already. Funnly enough, there is some audio of it on youtube!!! - CLICKY.

One thing I have seen however is my fan is used a lot more in Windows. It's virtually never on when I use Linux Mint.

I have seen the other threads already and had even seen the YouTube video. But in all of the other threads no one actually came up with a solution, except for the "undervolting", which is something I didn't really want to have to do. I was hoping just to use a program to control the fan speed.

But I am guessing I will probably have to undervolt it then. I'm trying to find an easy to understand guide, because I am a bit worried about destroying my computer when trying to do it.

Also yes I definitely agree it is to related Vista generating a lot of heat. I wonder if Vista SP1 helps deals with this. But I did hear that SP1 has problems with the SigmaTel audio drivers so it might not be ideal for the FZ.

My audio is working fine. You should install SP1 since it has many security fixes. About the fan, I think its just normal - you'll have to stick with it I suppose. OR, phone/email sony support about the issue.

All in all, the FZ is a perfect machine imo, except for the with only one issue that affects all users with is the fan noise. Then again, my other friends fujitsu siemens fan has a 'grinding' noise to it when its on. However the fan is hardly ever on, probably because it has a integrated GPU.

Not ALL users. My FZ190 is not very noisy at all and I have the Nvidia graphics.

OK thanks for the help. I will probably install SP1 and possibly dabble with undervolting, but still really not sure about it.

Does anyone have advice/suggestions about undervolting a Vaio FZ?

Also, anyone know a program for controlling fan speed that works for Vaio's?

Very useful guide. Thanks for that. I'll give it a try.
