I am a current owner of a Sony SZ160P. I think this is the first generation SZ.

I am ready for an upgrade and I have been considering the SZ791. The fully loaded version that is going for $2499 at most places.

In my search for a new laptop I started looking at Lenovo T61's. They offer a 14.1" that is about 1 lb heavier but fully loaded it is about $600 less.

For me money is not an issue, I don't mind spending the extra money for an SZ since I have NO complaints about my current computer. I just want the fastest and best notebook possible right now in a portable size.

So. Should I stick wih the SZ791? Is it as good or still even better than the Lenovo? Will I regert the extra size and weight of the Lenovo? I carry my laptop with me everywhere I go.

A side note - does anyone know if Sony ever decides to offer a blu-ray burner for the SZ - would I be able to upgrade the SZ791 down the road to a newer blu-ray when they become available?

T Series Thinkpad was the ultimate daddy, reliable, fast, Lenovo have not messed with a winning formula wish I had one instead of my crappy Vaio. My T21 and T42 were both great machines.

If you want the fastest SZ, customize a 780. The 791 does not come with a 7200RPM HD, nor the best processor. The only physical difference between these two machines is the 791 has the carbon fiber weave. The 780 is still a carbon fiber model, you just don't see the weave on it's lid. A maxed out SZ780 is $2440.00 + tax + $40.00 to upgrade RAM to 4GB.

If I order a fully loaded SZ780 right now does anyone know how fast they are shipping them?

Something like 24 hours to get sent then allow more 2 days to come at your doorstep.
Go for the SZ, I think it's the better option out there!

Unfortunately, the estimated ship date is 2/19/2008. If you're still planning to order, I just received a 5% discount coupon from Sony, PM me and I will give you the code.

okay, lets go for honesty. What do you plan to do with said new computer? Are you a gamer? Photographer? Musician? Media applications require a faster computer but if you're just putzing around on the laptop then I would recommend going for something cheaper.

I just bought the FZ230 for performing since I'm a musician. I do it professionally and its not uncommon for me to perform in front of a couple hundred or thousand people. The FZ230 still outperforms my needs at the moment and I'm a pretty technical producer. I paid $1100 for my computer. Money may not be an option but I honestly feel people waste their money when spending $2k+ on a new computer.

I do everything on my laptop. Webdesign, photoshop, illustrator, email, surfing, pretty much everything except for games. Sometimes I could have 10 applications open at one time. I use it at work, at home, and on the road.

Money is not an issue since my work picks up the bill. I got the green light "get whatever you want"

    I can spent $2500 on a sony sz791 or $1800 for a Lenovo T61 14.1 widescreen.

I just want to get the best thin light laptop I can get.

(plus a docking station is a must)

I have been considering a SONY SZ, a Lenovo T61 14.1" Widescreen and a Dell M1330. I have issues with any Dell that may be warranted and may not be. I prefer the SONY SZ for the size and the screen, but I prefer the Lenovo for the keyboard and the overall quality and the lower price. The SONY SZ is still the perfect size and weight for what I really want. I like the lighter 13.3"
far better than the heavier 14.1", and again, I think the SONY SZ has a much better screen than the T61. If not for the SZ's keyboard, I would pay the extra money and get the SZ, even though support is also better on the Lenovo's by far!

Does it sound like I am torn? Yes, indeed.

I would wait to see the Lenovo X300 13.3" but I understand that it will be over $2,500 and will have a WXGA+ screen which I think is too high a resolution for a 13.3" screen.

Man, I envy you. Since that is the case, I'll suggest not to think any further & just go with the SZ. I'm sure you'll love it. :)

The SZ sounds like a better choice in your situation if plan to do a lot of traveling. The only crappy part will be those intensive hours behind the laptop screen while working in photoshop. I'd try and squeeze a monitor for the office in on the receipt too. That way when you plug in at the office you have a nice 19"+ monitor. :)

Having a larger screen is nice, however I'm doing web design work on my SZ650 and it's really not that bad. So I don't think a separate monitor is a must. Of course if you think you can get your work place to pay for it, why not :)?
