    Well this happens once in a relatively long time, but i figured i might ask to find out if anything is wrong or going wrong.
    the last time it froze, i just clicked clear browsing data in google chrome. it took really really long, failing to ever finish, and my entire pc was stuck. the time in the taskbar wasn't updating either. and not much hd access (judging by the light in the front). some kind of windows lockup or something, then it rebooted after about possibly 10 minutes or so. blue screen, windows was shut down bad.

    i think i maybe got this kind of thing 5 times so far in 9 months of owning the z.

    Possible HDD failure? Check the status of your HDD and memory as well. Bad components do funky things.

    well i checked the ssd drives are intact, 2312 hours usage though.
    and i am using your driver computercowboy... it's working fantastic.
    not once did the fn keys for backlight intensity and volume freeze and stop functioning like the stock hybrid drivers.

    I had something similar happen to me a few times while using Intel graphics. It was the Intel driver causing it.

    @XTACTIC
    Assuming you are running the BIOS hack.... does this happen in speed mode and stamina mode? Or does it only happen in speed mode.

    What nVidia version are you running? 280.26? What Intel HD version are you running?

    I think it is not video related, I've been running the BIOS hack and the past three or four iterations of nVidia drivers and I've never had a lockup.

    Are you by any chance running anything in your ExpressCard slot? I was using an eSATA card for a while that caused instability.

    When was the last time you did a full clean install? Have you ever done a clean install?

    At any rate, go into the system properties (right click 'my computer' and select properties) then click advanced system settings, and under the advanced tab> system failure uncheck 'automatically restart'. Maybe you'll get to see what is causing the problem.

    @computercowboy - i have never clean installed. this is still running the 'same install' as stock (10 months ago purchased), except that i have 'upgraded' it from home premium to ultimate after some time. i don't use the xpresscard slot at all. that still has the cover on it. (i quit using the usb3.0 xpresscard only moments after getting it because it won't stay in there, and driver issues etc). on a side note, i have mentioned somewhere on this forum, along with another person or more that those of us using aida64, and having it running in the background - causes the system to lockup (you could only move the mouse), but everything else freezes including system time. .. but i can't really recall of if i had that running on the last crash.

    @anytimer - thanks for the tip. i will definately try that!

    It's only doing 2347 hours in about 10 months. it's just started to warm up, even a bit cold.
    i'm guessing driver issue somewhere with some one of my devices.

    the SSD checks out just fine and i did some Linpack testing (Intel Burn Test Tool) for 2 hours. all is good.
