    1) Make sure your wireless is enabled or turned on, Sony usually puts a button on the laptop that allows you to do this or right click your network connections and make sure the wireless connection is enabled.

    2) Use Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Setup and make sure it is set to using a LAN and not dial up.

    thanks abaxter...

although a relative laptop newbie, even i was able to switch the wifi button on!! but i appreciate your help anyway!!

i made some progress... the it guy in the office got me onto the office network, so at least i knew it was working ok.

i have no internet connection in my apartment but picked up a network from somewhere anyway... on this i was able to connect to the internet as well, but after a few minutes the signal seems to drop off.... ?

there is a patch on sony support which says will improve the wireless performance so i installed that but dont notice a difference....

am i doing something illegal by using this mystery network which my laptop locates?

also, is it normal that the signal strengh varies if i am perhaps some way away from where the base station is?? at first i can watch news videos on yahoo news but then it basically becomes so weak that i cannot even use the internet???

    thanks
