    As mentioned here:-

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.aspx?newsID=1854

Any idea of when it is being released in the UK? And what sort of price it might be?

BTW, anyone know if the shown model has the Radeon 9700 or the 9600?

    Thanks,

    K

This is released in the US and Europe as the A series - the US models are A130, A170, A190, etc. You can see it on www.sonystyle.com. There is a corresponding model on Sony's European site, the VGNA117.

    By the way, it's only a 64MB ATI MR9700.

Thanks for your reply! Certainly cleared up a little confusion.

Out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what the width x length dimensions (as opposed to the 17" diagonal) of the actual 'visible' screen area are on Sony's 17" WUXGA screens, please?

    thanks

Here's the specs on the A170 with 17" screen:
    http://www.sonystyle.com/intershoproot/eCS/Store/en/documents/specifications/a170.pdf

From that doc, the machine itself is 16"x11". The screen is obviously just a bit smaller than that. If you paid attention in geometry class, you can figure out the actual screen dimensions using the Pythagorean theorem (A^2 + B^2 = C^2, where C is 17" in this case) and the aspect ratio of the screen (16:10). I get around 14.4"x9" in my calculations.

    Thanks highlandsun :)

I originally used trigonometry to work out the dimensions of the screen, going with 17" as the hypotenuse, but I thought that normal widescreen used a 16:9 aspect ratio?

    Now you're talking algebra - the screen resolution is 1920 x 1200. 1920/120 = 16, 1200/120 = 10. Whatever "normal" may be, this screen is 16:10, not 16:9.

    Thanks highland!

Looking back at the links, the ones you gave were for the A117s. I think the link in my first post may be a different (newer) model.

" The specs on this sweet looking VAIO include up to a 2.0GHz Pentium M Dothan processor, 80 GB 5400RPM Hard Drive, 17" Wide Screen UXGA, ATI Radeon 128MB Graphics processor and a thin yet wide design."

Is this the A190 model? I can't seem to find anything on SonyStyle (Europe), or the UK Sony site.

    Thanks much.
