I have an AR-VGN370. After many months of waiting Vista Service Pack 1 finally is offered via Windows Update. I have assumed it was the Sigmatel driver that had prevented me from receivng SP 1. Is there anyone else for whom SP1 has recently become available and installed successfully? I am very hestitant to allow the install.

My case is slightly different: for me, SP1 was not available, but I installed it manually regardless. Haven't tested thoroughly, but everything looks fine.
I have a Dell Latitude E6400, so no big similarities there -
When I tried to shut my computer down, two updates were installed. I then restarted the computer. I checked Windows Update and Service Pack 1 no longer is shown as an available update. It appears I will never get Service Pack 1.

Hi Jayhawk
You're absolutely right, Microsoft do block SP1 from showing up in Windows Update if you have certain versions of the Sigmatel driver: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343
You're best bet is to back up your software and do a clean SP1 install from scratch using all the updated drivers. Takes about an hour if you follow my guide in this post:
