    Hi all

I have a Sony AW11 (18.4" screen) laptop. I am currently running it with an external kbd & screen, lid closed.

This works well but I find that I cannot power it on without the lid at least partially open. My guess is that this is a hardware related thing. I have played with the Power Options Control Panel to no avail.

Does anyone know if I can power up with the lid closed on this model? This would make things a lot easier for me.

Also, my monitor accepts DVI and HDMI inputs. Using DVI, the screen blanks to black when my computer sleeps. When using HDMI, putting the computer to sleep gives me a pure blue screen (not a BSOD). Why would this be? No sleep signal being sent to the monitor over HDMI?

    Thanks for your kind attention.

    BRgds

For turning on the computer with the lid shut I would suggest that you look into Wake On Lan or WOL. Google will be your best friend setting that up. It works best if you have a smartphone on you, click a button and your computer turns on.

Be warned: make sure your laptop doesn't turn on accidentally while in the bag/briefcase/enclosed container.

My old motherboard (ASUS P5W DH Deluxe), had a remote control and a wireless reciever plugged into the usb port. Im sure if you could buy such a all-purpose control then you could power it on, provided the usb port in question supports the feature! I think most do, now, though.

Okay, I set up WOL as per multiple online guides:

Checked for magic packet receipt with lappy turned on - all was good to this point, received magic packet on port 9 as expected.

Problem now is that the onboard NIC seems to shut down when the lappy shuts down. My desktop machine LAN card stays awake after shutdown, enabling WOL from "cold".

How do I make the NIC stay awake when the lappy is switched off? Is there a configuration setting I can use?

    Thanks again everyone.

I think you have to check the BIOS for the WOL setting.

You might just try to research what the mechanism is that detects the lid state. Many notebooks use a magnet in the bezel. If you remove the magnet then the laptop will always think the lid is open and allow you to use the power button. Just food for thought.

    Back again.

Thanks Beaups - that's my last option. After this fiasco I will be avoiding Sony kit from now on.

I upgraded the NIC driver from the Marvell site and then looked into flashing the BIOS but did not neet to do it - already at the latest revision.

So despite having all the appropriate bells and whistles from the s/w point of view, the mobo stops supplying juice to the LAN port on shutdown/hibernate/sleep. Junk - how am I supposed to automate overnight updates?

I don't get why Sony cripple their kit like this. Last one I buy.

    Thanks all
