Hey, does anyone experience a laggy aero theme on speed mode with switchable graphics? I own the S series with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD 6300m. The aero lags when I am in speed mode, but it goes away once I switch to stamina mode and then back. If I start in stamina mode, the lag isn't there.

Not for me, I'm on a 2012 Vaio S though with the NiViDa Hybrid. What's your Areo Preforance in the Windows Experience Index? Mine's a 5.3

You see that's the wierd thing! If I'm on speed mode, I would be using the amd graphics, and the wei is 6.7! If the laptop is running on Intel, it's smooth.

See if you can find a driver update. That usually helps fix such issues. On my Z1 the stock driver crashes so often I can't bear to use it at all.

I've already tried to reinstall the updated driver that sony provided from their support page and sadly, it didn't help. :s Another thing is that the aero theme doesn't lag on the intel graphics card, so it might be a problem with the amd driver.

    I have 2011 S model like yours ..

May I ask ...: What do you mean by "lags" in aero theme ..?

Can you give me a example ...?

Sure! When I said lag, I meant on the desktop when I'm dragging windows around. It seems as if there is screen tearing that is occurring as I do this. Games that I don't play in full screen mode also experience this lag.

Are there any community developed drivers for your model? That's what I meant when I suggested a driver update.

Well, I've tried some of the leshcat drivers that he posted up on his site, if that's what you mean. It still lags, however. :/ Also tried to use this one from the "Discoveries on Vaio SA/SB/SC" page on notebook review. In that topic, it contains some others who also experience the same lag that I'm getting.

    Thanks .

I try to duplicate what you said on both Intel & Raideon and did not see

    the lag ...

Could it be in some setting ...?

mine is in defaults ...and never touched it .

The lag only occurs when I start the laptop in speed mode, when the Radeon is in use. If I try to switch to stamina or anything that involves switching to the basic theme and then back to the aero theme on any mode, the lag is gone. It like as if it resets or something. If it is a setting, do you mean in the CCC?

Does no one experience this? It's a problem that I've found that shouldn't happen. :(

does it happen when the laptop is plugged in or on battery? check your CCC, under Power options. make sure PowerPlay is enabled and is set to Maximum performance when plugged in.

also, in VAIO Control Center, what is your Thermal Strategy set to under Power options?

i have the same laptop as yours (2011 SA), running Catalyst 11.9 installed on top of SONY's September 2011 GPU drivers, and am not experiencing any lag whatsoever. i should mention that i have bought my laptop with Fresh Start enabled and also have uninstalled some of the useless bundled SONY applications and have disabled some startup items as well.

it could also be that your DPC latency is way too high. check it with DPC Latency Checker [ download].

Ty for replying, it happens after logging in to my laptop on speed mode, regardless of whether of not it is plugged in. Powerplay is enabled and both Plugged in and Battery are set to maximum performance. My thermal strategy is on balanced. According to DPC, it states that I'm fine. At the moment, I'm using 11.12 on top of the sony updated drivers, although I did try using different drivers that were developed like leshcat, but to no avail.

If you don't mind me asking, what is Fresh Start?

you can get a "Fresh Start" computer from SONY if you customize it and order Windows 7 Professional (for $50 more). then, SONY will not install a lot of its own bundled applications before sending the laptop to you. you'll get less bloatware on your machine as opposed to the normal way which includes all that extra software. it's not a completely clean install though.

regarding your problem, i'm out of ideas. my only guess is that it could be one of the installed applications that's running in the background.

Fresh start means your laptop is preinstalled with drivers and all required utilities to make it fully functional.
It's also like you install it from a Windows disc, then install drivers and utilities for all functional keys.

Hm this is very odd, I'm using fraps just to measure the frame rate of the desktop and it's getting about 40-45 fps. After I switch it to basic and back to aero, 60 fps no problem.

it might be refresh rate related (i'm just guessing, since i'm out of ideas!)...

if you right-click on your desktop, select Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel, what is the refresh rate that's showing there?

also, in Control Panel > Power Options > (whatever power plan currently selected) > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > VAIO Power Management (tab), what are the refresh rates?

They're both at 60Hz. :( I might actually just live with it since it doesn't make sense...
