I purchased my second Sony Viao laptop in January 2006, and along with it three additional BP2SC batteries. The extra batteries were puchased from Sony Style. At the time I was travelling a lot, and needed the battery life for long flights. Those trips ended in May 2006.

In mid summer 2007, I discovered that one of the three would no longer hold a charge. A second failed later same summer, and the third was found to be dead and useless in June 2008.

OK, I know... they are outside their one year warranty.

But, to have three batteries totally useless within 29 months is, in my opinion, totally beyond reasonable expectation.

Sony refuses to offer any kind of assistance other than to charge $200+ each for their replacement.

Um...I don't know, it's not like you have one failed and then bought another one so three batteries lasted sequentially for only 29 months. You started using all three at the same time and two lasted 18 months and another lasted 30 months, so the average is like 22 months -- it's not good, but it's not that far from the average life of all batteries (AFAIK, about two years), either. Also, it is known that if you don't use the battery, it dies even faster (or at least as fast) than being used often -- and it sounds like you did stop using two of them pretty much after five months.

I feel sorry for you, but I am not sure this is completely unexpected. My BPS2 lasted 3.5 years before I had to buy a BPS2C to replace it. Part of it is just the luck of the draw, I guess.

I've also had bad luck with the BPS2 on my SZ3. First one died after 10 months (battery not detected), replaced under warranty. Second one is dying a year after that (capacity down to about 70% and the capacity reading is inaccurate while charging).

Maybe its just the BPS2/BPL2 series that have this problem.
