Hello. Im looking to buy a Sony and Im kinda stuck between the the Sony FZ series and the CR. Whats the early word on the CR series. It looks like a nice compact system. I havent had the chance to see it in person, but it looks pretty nice. Anyone have one yet? Any help is good. Thanks.

The CR sure looks good, but I think the FZ is slightly more compact. At least it looks that way, but don't take my word for it. Probably should just check it out at the store.

There's a review on this site for the CR, just navigate to the Reviews tab to find that. And there will be a review of the VAIO FZ posted tomorrow.

FZ is positioned in entertainment field,It has better LCD screen views and better graphic card(128mb memo.while CR has 64mb) for gaming.but it is really over heat after using for hours, especially goes up rapidly when you are gaming.

I think cr has better balance than fz.

CR is rather big for 14.1inch, while FZ is rather small for 15.4inch. FZ has much better screen, as long as you don't get cheaper models. And 8400GT in FZ performs comparable to GDDR2 8600GS...FZ seems like a better choice to me.

CR does not have a 64MB graphics card. It has an Intel X3100.

the FZ is way better than the CR... they r allmost same size:
    CR: 13.2” x 9.8” x 1.67”, 5.5 pounds, 14.1 screen
    FZ: 14.0" x 10.2" x 1.4", 5.75 pounds, 15.4 screen

the FZ has better graphics card 256mb 8400mGT, the CR Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100:
    3dmarks06 scores
    8400mGT: 2575
    x3100: 532

the FZ has HDMI video port and bluetooth and and CR dont

    The CR has bluetooth.

I'm on the CR right now, and I love it. I did a semi-clean install using this thread. Note that the recovery directory on the CR is located in C:\Program Files\Sony\Vaio Recovery.

By the way, this keyboard feels amazing. :)

Has anyone had problems with the battery that was reported previously? If u pick the machine up while it is on, does it power off because of the faulty battery? Hopefully that was fixed by Sony. Let me know

The CR should've been slimmer and more portable. If that was the case, it would make a better comparison with the FZ.

I just went and looked at the CR today. It's not the slimmest machine out there, but it's by no means bulky. And if it does seem to thick, the shiny lid will keep your eyes off it........so...shiny......

Same here my CR doesn't even make a noise or move when its in the locked position.
I think this laptop is very well-rounded.

I'm glad to hear some good things about this laptop. I'm thinking about picking one up during tax free weekend here.

I really love the design - especially the shiny lid and silver accents on the sangria model.

Any other thoughts on the CR model so far?

QueenOfSpades, I bought the Sangria model. That said, the Dove model looks great as well. As does the simple, black one.

EDIT: Hell, they all look great. :)

Yes, it really is a dead sexy computer. I'm going to get the sangria model myself.

It's also on sale at Best Buy for $1199 - I'm really hoping the price drop holds until tax-free weekend in Mass.

How do you like the computer so far? Any complaints, specific praises? Thanks in advance, I haven't been able to find anything online beyond the generic tech review.

The keyboard is nice, but it's a love-it-or-hate-it type of thing. The bloatware it comes with is TERRIBLE, however if you follow the link in my signature, you'll be up and running in no time.

My screen flashes black after Windows loads (for a fraction of a second). I don't remember if it did that before I updated the X3100 drivers or not. Either way, it's a minor annoyance.

Also, the Best Buys here in Oklahoma have the same deal, so I don't think it's going anywhere soon.

In short, after you remove the bloatware and free trial offers (cleverly disguised as "Sony Productivity Center" and such), you'll find that it's a great machine.

    EDIT: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=112304

Looks like my problem is solved. :)

    EDIT: Nope. :(

Thanks for the input, repped you. Honestly, I like this computer because it's gorgeous. I already have a self-built monster desktop that I use for gaming. I want something pretty for on-the-go. The specs are good, the style has made my decision.

I looked at the new colored inspirons, but I'm not a fan of their lines. I'll probably make my decision tonight.

I called Best Buy and they told me the price is only for the sale this week..

The Productivity Center (if I remember correctly) is just a collection of free trial offers.

    Fixed it. :)

It was a problem with Microsoft's Transient Multi-Monitor service.

It takes some getting used to but it's nice after the learning curve.
